Spiritual experience and guided meditations: Imaginative suggestibility and the influence of authority

Abstract:

Záměrem mojí diplomové práce bylo rozšířit a posunout výzkum spirituálních zážitků zasazených do kontextu tzv. alternativní spirituality, konkrétně praxe řízených meditací. Experimentální metodou jsem se pokusila zjistit, jaké obecné lidské dispozice umožňují autentické prožívání podobných stavů. Můj hypotetický předpoklad byl, že řízené meditace využívají k navození spirituálních zkušeností senzorickou deprivaci a další typy manipulace s mechanismy lidské kognice (prediktivní kódování, vliv autority) v kombinaci s individuálními psychologickými dispozicemi (imaginativní sugestibilitou a náchylností k denním fantaziím) a vlivem přímých verbálních sugescí uvnitř silně sugestivního kontextu. Za využití těchto potenciálně klíčových faktorů jsem proto vytvořila experimentální simulaci „řízené meditace s léčivým a posilujícím potenciálem“, jejímž účelem bylo indukovat participantům spirituální zkušenost. Sugerovaný posilující efekt procedury jsem pak ověřovala pomocí měření změn v prahu bolestivosti před a po meditaci; dále jsem se pokusila kvalitativní cestou zmapovat charakter dosažených spirituálních zážitků i obecný kontext terénní praxe řízených meditací. Ačkoli jsem nezískala dostatek participantů pro validní statistickou analýzu, podařilo se mi zjistit pozitivní tendence obou psychologických dispozic vzhledem k dosažení spirituálních zážitků i jejich charakteru, stejně jako lépe pochopit roli autority v kontextu řízených meditací. Navíc jsem izolovala dva různé typy „pocitu přítomnosti“ další osoby nebo entity, o nichž předpokládám, že jsou generované skrze odlišné kognitivní mechanismy a jejichž další výzkum – stejně jako výzkum kognitivních základů spirituálních zkušeností obecně – je relevantní i vzhledem k širší aktuální debatě.

Abstract:

The aim of my diploma thesis was to extend the spiritual experiences research in the context of an alternative spirituality, specifically guided meditation practice. Utilizing the experimental methodology, I strived to investigate which general human dispositions are capable to produce these subjectively authentic kinds of experiences. I hypothesized that guided meditation technique spontaneously inducing spiritual experiences by working with sensory deprivation and other ways of manipulation with general cognitive mechanisms (predictive coding, influence of authority) supported by individual psychological dispositions (imaginative suggestibility, fantasy proneness) and influence of direct verbal suggestions in setting of highly suggestive context. Therefore, I designed an experimental simulation of the “healing and strengthening guided meditation” by involving the listed conditions to induce spiritual experience in my participants, while measuring suggested strengthening effect by using the measurement of participants’ pain thresholds before and after the meditation. Moreover, I made a qualitative research on participants’ immediate experience as well as on a broader cultural background of guided meditations. Although I did not collect data from enough number of participants to perform a valid evaluation of statistical analysis, I found positive tendencies in relationship between measured psychological dispositions, character of spiritual experiences and subjective intensity of these experiences as well as between the role of authority and guided meditation practice. Finally, I isolated two specific kinds of “sensed presence” that are, in my opinion, generated by different cognitive mechanisms, so I discuss its relevance for further research and current broader debate.
