Picturing of Chinese Immigrants in the American Press between years 1865–1882

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce pojednává o způsobech vyobrazení čínských imigrantů v ilustracích vycházejících v amerických periodicích v letech 1865–1882. Výzkum je soustředěn na obsahovou analýzu vybraných politicko-sociálních ilustrací ze dvou amerických novin, a to jsou Harper’s Weekly, pro něž tvořil karikatury Číňanů kreslíř Thomas Nast, a The San Francisco Illustrated Wasp, u nichž pracoval ilustrátor George Frederick Keller. V práci jsou srovnávány individuální přístupy těchto dvou karikaturistů k imigraci Číňanů do USA. Práce se dále zaměřuje hlavně na vzhled vyobrazených Číňanů a situace, v nichž jsou imigranti vyobrazeni. Vysvětleno je i užití různých motivů na ilustracích a tyto motivy jsou následně dány do kontextu se skutečnými společenskými událostmi a s historickým vývojem v USA. Cílem je také zjistit, jaké další osoby, ať už symbolické nebo historické, byly často zobrazovány na obrázcích a jakou úlohu na nich plnily.

Abstract:

This Bachelor thesis deals with distinctive ways of depicting Chinese immigrants in the illustrations which were published during the period 1865–1882. The aim is to analyse selected political-social cartoons from two American newspapers. The research is focused on the illustrations of Thomas Nast, who worked for the Harper's Weekly, and on the work of George Frederick Keller, whose cartoons were published in The San Francisco Illustrated Wasp. One of the goals is to compare these two cartoonist's attitudes towards the Chinese immigration. The work also focuses on the appearance of the depicted Chinese and the situations in which immigrants are pictured. Another aim is to interpret the motives in the selected cartoons and these motives are then put in the context of actual social events along with the historical development of the USA. The last goal of this thesis is to find out what other persons, whether symbolic or historical, were often depicted in the pictures and what is their role in these cartoons.
