Non-Standard English Varieties in Literary Translation: “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se věnuje literárnímu překladu nespisovných variet angličtiny, konkrétně afroamerického a bělošského jižanského dialektu v románu „Černobílý svět“ od americké spisovatelky Kathryn Stockettové. První část práce se zaměřuje především na charakteristiku těchto nářečí a teoretická doporučení pro jejich převod do jiných jazyků. Praktická část se zabývá nejprve analýzou několika děl jižanské literatury, která byla již v minulosti úspěšně převedena do češtiny; účelem tohoto rozboru je zjistit, zda jsou teoretické postupy aplikovány i v praxi, případně které z nich jsou v českých překladech využívány nejčastěji. Analýza románu „Černobílý svět“ se pak soustřeďuje na to, zda překladatelka Jana Kordíková uplatnila dříve použité postupy, nebo hledala strategie vlastní, a také na otázku, zda se jí podařilo dialekty v dostatečné míře vyjádřit.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with non-standard English varieties in literary translation; namely with rendition of African American Vernacular English and American White Southern English in the Czech version of Kathryn Stockett’s novel “The Help”. The first part focuses mainly on features of these dialects, and theoretical approaches to their rendering in other languages. The beginning of the practical part deals with analysis of several novels from the Southern literary tradition which were successfully translated into Czech in the past. The purpose of this is to find out whether approaches recommended in translation theory are applied in practice as well, and which of them are particularly prominent in the Czech versions of the respective novels. Analysis of “The Help” focuses on the question whether Jana Kordíková, the translator, used strategies similar to those employed in earlier translations, or whether she was looking for a new approach; attention is also paid to whether she managed to render the above-mentioned dialects to an appropriate extent.
