Teleportation in Virtual Reality Using a Handheld Minimap

Abstract:

Teleportační laser je nejpoužívanější metodou pohybu ve virtuální realitě, ale umožňuje pohyb pouze na krátké vzdálenosti. Toto omezení nutí uživatele se opakovaně teleportovat, aby dosáhli svého cíle. Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na zkoumání pohybu na velké vzdálenosti ve virtuální realitě pomocí modelu zmenšeného světa. V uživatelské studii byly vyvinuty a porovnány dva různé přístupy k pohybu. Všich dvanáct účastníků dalo přednost jedné z nově vytvořených metod na středních i dlouhých vzdálenostech. Studie také ukázala, že tyto metody jsou z hlediska rychlosti a přesnosti buď srovnatelné nebo lepší než standardní metoda pohybu. Tato zjištění potvrzují, že metoda pohybu pomocí zmenšeného modelu světa je lepší než standardní metoda na delší vzdálenosti.

Abstract:

In the VR applications today, the laser pointer teleportation is the most common locomotion method; however, it often limits the user only to short to medium range. This directly affects user experience as users sometimes need to perform multiple teleportations to reach the target destination. This thesis explores the use of long-range teleportation, by interacting with a handheld World-In-Miniature minimap. Two locomotion method variations were implemented and compared in a user study. All of the 12 study participants preferred one or the other of the implemented methods for medium and long ranges. The study also found that the WIM methods achieved comparable or better precision and speed results during the measured locomotion tasks. These results indicate that WIM locomotion is better than the standard locomotion method for large range locomotion.
