The Word UN in Questions

Abstract:

The purpose of this diploma thesis is to help clarify the usage of the French “un” – traditionally serving the function of the indefinite article as well as a cardinal numeral – which often takes on different meanings, depending on context. The paper deals with its linguistic development and its description in grammatical and linguistic papers of French and Czech origin, and using the parallel corpus InterCorp it illustrates the translation options in Czech. Finally it attempts to apply Marc Wilmet's theory, which explains the determiner's meaning(s) based on the innovative concept of “extensivité”, to a sample of the determiner's occurrences.

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je pomoci objasnit princip fungování francouzského „un“ – v tradičním pojetí zastávajícího roli jak neurčitého členu, tak základní číslovky – jež v závislosti na kontextu nabývá mnohdy odlišných významů. Práce tedy pojednává o jeho jazykovém vývoji a jeho popisu v gramatických a lingvistických pracích francouzské a české provenience, dále ilustruje za pomoci paralelního korpusu InterCorp způsoby jeho vyjádření v češtině a na závěr se pokouší aplikovat na vybraný vzorek výskytů tohoto determinantu teorii Marca Wilmeta, která vysvětluje význam(y) slova „un“ na základě inovativního konceptu „extensivité“.
