The past and the present in James Joyce's "The Dead"

Abstract:

This thesis examines James Joyce?s short story ?The Dead,? which is a part of the collection Dubliners . It is an analysis of the entire work, however, it is especially focused on the complicated relationship between the past and the present. To understand the whole meaning of the story, it is divided into several subchapters, which are concentrated on Joyce?s life, view of Dublin, Joyce?s comprehension of death and his life philosophy. It shows the city Dublin at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, class distinction between the old and the new generation. A cardinal importance has jealousy, nostalgic feelings and the final revelation that represents the fundamental part of the entire story. All the attitudes and references mentioned in the thesis are supported by the quotations either from the primary source or from the secondary sources.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se věnuje jedné z povídek Jamese Joyce ?Nebožtíci,? uvedené ve sbírce Dubliňané. Jedná se o analýzu celého díla, která je speciálně zaměřena na komplikovaný vztah minulosti a přítomnosti. Práce je rozdělena do několika kapitol, které se soustřeďují na život Jamese Joyce, jeho pohled na rodné město Dublin, dále na jeho chápání smrti a životní filosofii. Je zde také popsána chmurná atmosféra Dublinu na přelomu 19. a 20. století, rozpory mezi starší a mladší generací. Významnou roli hrají pocity žárlivosti, nostalgie a především Gabrielovo prozření, které představuje základní poselství ?Nebožtíků.?
