A Comparative Study of English, Czech and Slovak Weather Lore Sayings

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá pranostikami a porovnává anglické, české a slovenské pranostiky. V první části se zmiňuje rozdíl v terminologii mezi idiomatikou a frazeologií, a je zdůrazněna potřeba sjednocení terminologie v této oblasti. Následuje definice frazeologie a začlenění pranostik do oboru paremiologie, s vysvětlením předmětu jejího studia a objasněním paremiografické činnosti. Dále jsou popsána přísloví a vyčleněny pranostiky jakožto poddruh přísloví. Tuto část uzavírá kapitola věnovaná pranostikám, jejich původu a významu v minulosti a dnes. Druhá část zkoumá konkrétní pranostiky tří jazyků, vztahující se k jednotlivým měsícům roku. Cílem práce je prokázat, že pranostiky nejsou pouhé pověry, ale mohou také reálně předpovídat počasí nebo obsahovat různé lidové moudrosti, týkající se přírody. Je zřejmé, že pranostiky v jednotlivých jazycích se mohou lišit z důvodu odlišných geografických poloh daných zemí.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with weather lore and compares English, Czech and Slovak weather lore sayings. In the first part, the differences between idioms and phrasemes are analyzed and a need for a unification of terminologies in this area is expressed. Definition of phraseology and categorization of weather lore sayings into the field of paremiology follows, explaining the subject of its study and clarifying the activities of paremiographers. Furthermore, the thesis specifies that weather sayings form a subcategory of proverbs. The last chapter of this section is devoted to weather lore sayings, their origin and importance in the past and today. The second part examines specific weather sayings of the three languages that are related to the months of the year. The aim is to determine the fact that the sayings are not mere superstitions but can also realistically predict the weather or contain folk wisdom concerning nature. It is evident that the weather lore sayings of the individual languages can differ due to the different geographical locations of the given countries.
