The auteur remake: Hollywood director's approach to foreign films

Abstract:

Tématem diplomové práce je analýza autorství v rámci filmového remaku, konkrétně na příkladech filmů Martina Scorseseho, Davida Finchera a Christophera Nolana. Práce se soustřeďuje na jejich filmy Skrytá identita (2006), Muži, kteří nenávidí ženy (2011) a Insomnie (2002), přičemž konfrontuje obecný sentiment ohledně nepotřebnosti remaků s předpoklady autorství u výjimečných tvůrčích osobností. Nejprve je na pozadí literatury vysvětleno, jak lze chápat autorství v rámci remaku a kde má literatura v tomto ohledu mezery. Následně je zkoumáno, jak tito tvůrci přistoupili k přetočení existujícího díla, přičemž zohledněno je nejen psaní obecné, ale i dobová kritika konkrétních filmů, která disponuje různými předsudky a paradoxy. Závěr ukazuje, že výrazné jméno tvůrce může zastínit ambivalenci tvůrčích změn a zároveň přehlušit existenci původního filmového díla. Autorský remake v mnoha ohledech těží z obeznámenosti diváctva s tvůrcem než z nějakých inherentních kvalit, které by režisér přinesl.

Abstract:

This master thesis deals with the concept of authorship in film remakes, specifically the films of Martin Scorsese, David Fincher and Christopher Nolan. Focusing on their films The Departed (2006), The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) and Insomnia (2002), it confronts the common sentiment about the unnecessariness of remakes with the assumption that established filmmakers come with some sort of creative auteur vision. First, the models of understanding authorship in remake is explained with regard to the topics literature. It is then examined how these filmmakers approached remaking an existing film while taking into consideration the reviews of these films, which often come with various prejudices and paradoxes. It is later argued that auteur remakes have the power of overshadowing their own creativity and the existence of the foreign film simply with the established auteur name. The auteur remake often benefits from the fact that audiences know the filmmaker's name, rather than from some assumed qualitites brought by the director.
