Abstract:

Tato práce pojednává o lékařských experimentech, které vykonal v letech 1845–1849 americký lékař a průkopník moderní gynekologie James Marion Sims na několika Afroamerických otrokyních. Zaměřuje se převážně na způsob, jakým jsou tyto experimenty vnímány veřejností, jaké je obklopují kontroverze a jaký mají dopad na současné události v USA. Dále popisuje důvody, proč je důležité uvádět na pravou míru podobné události, a také proces, který vedle ke vzniku monumentu oslavující oběti těchto experimentů.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the medical experiments conducted on a group of enslaved African-American women by James Marion Sims between the years 1845 and 1849. It focuses especially on the way in which these experiments were perceived by the public, what controversies arose in relation to these experiments, and how they in-fluence contemporary events in the US. Further, it presents the reasons why it is important to keep investigating historical events like this, as well as the process that led to the creation of the monument honoring the victims of these experiments.
