The Virgin Mary at st. Thomas church. Conceptualisation of visual representation on the example of the painting.

Abstract:

Ikona Matky Boží Svatotomské je nejstarším známým deskovým obrazem v České republice. Ve druhé polovině 14. století byla umístěna do klášterního kostela Zvěstování Panny Marie a sv. Tomáše augustiniánů eremitů v Brně. Klášter založil markrabě Jan Jindřich Lucemburský, mladší bratr Karla IV. jako pohřebiště moravské sekundogenitury rodu. Mariánský kult patřil mezi významné nástroje panovnické reprezentace Lucemburků. Historické prameny dokládají četné formy mariánské zbožnosti v pozdním středověku. Mnohé z nich byly zaváděny vládnoucími Lucembursky. Mezi ně patří zpívané mariánské liturgické hodinky, které zajišťovali mansionáři, nebo v brněnském případě řeholníci v klášteře sv. Tomáše. Karel IV. zbudoval v mariánském chóru katedrály sv. Víta v Praze císařskou nekropoli. Pražští mansionáři byli pověřeni udržováním stálé zádušní památky na zesnulé členy Lucemburského rodu. Podobně vypadala i memoriální praxe v pohřebním kostele moravských Lucemburků. V politice Karla IV. zaujímal důležité místo také kult relikvií a ikon starobylého původu. Pražská katedrála se stala poutním místem, kde byly ukazovány mariánské relikvie, z nichž za nejcennější byly považovány relikvie roušky Panny Marie. V roce 1401 moravský markrabě Jošt Lucemburský ozdobil obraz Panny Marie Svatotomské zlatem a drahokamy, takže se stal relikviářem pro relikvii zkrvavené roušky Panny Marie. Ikona se stala palladiem města Brna a symbolem Moravy. Mariánský kult založený moravskými Lucemburky v Brně tak pokračoval i po vymření dynastie, která jej učinila součástí své reprezentace.

Abstract:

The icon of Our Lady of St. Thomas is the oldest known panel painting in the Czech Republic. In the second half of the 14th century, it was placed in the monastery church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and St. Thomas of the augustinian hermits in Brno. The monastery was founded by Margrave Jan Jindřich of Luxemburg, the younger brother of Charles IV, as the burial place of the Mora-vian secundogeniture of the family. The Marian cult was one of the important instruments of the monarchic representation of the Luxembourgers. Historical sources document numerous forms of Marian devotion in the late Middle Ages. Many of them were introduced by the ruling Luxembourgers. Among them are the sung Marian liturgical hours, which were provided by the priests of the cathedral chapter, or in the case of Brno, by the religious in the monastery of St. Thomas. Charles IV built an imperial necropolis in the Marian choir of St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague. The Prague priests of the cathedral chapter were entrusted with main-taining permanent memorial services for the deceased members of the Luxembourg family. The memorial practice in the funeral church of the Moravian Luxembourgers looked similar. In the politics of Charles IV the cult of relics and icons of ancient origin also occupied an important place. The Prague Cathedral be-came a place of pilgrimage where Marian relics were displayed, of which the relics of the Virgin Mary's veil were considered the most valuable. In 1401, the Moravian margrave Jošt of Luxemburg decorated the image of the Virgin Mary at St. Thomas with gold and precious stones, so that it became a reliquary for the relic of the Virgin Mary’s blood stained veil. The icon became the palladium of the city of Brno and a symbol of Moravia. The Marian cult founded by the Moravian Luxembourgers in Brno continued even after the demise of the dynasty, which made it part of its representation.
