Abstract:

Nejdůležitějšími dřevinami podhorských a horských oblastí střední Evropy je smrk ztepilý (Picea abies (L.) H. Karst.) a buk lesní (Fagus sylvatica L.). Ačkoliv jsou oba tyto druhy uváděny jako vysoce variabilní z hlediska fenotypové plasticity, řada výzkumníků a modelů je shledala jako citlivé na dopady klimatické změny a vysoce senzitivní k nadcházejícímu oteplování a snižování srážkových úhrnů během vegetačního období. To je důvodem, proč se zvýšily obavy ohledně odolnosti a schopnosti přežití těchto druhů v řadě oblastí jejich rozšíření v důsledku dopadu změny klimatu. Nicméně, tyto dva druhy se liší v jejich strategiích a adaptačních reakcích na prostředí a lokální klimatické podmínky. Navzdory podrobnému výzkumu je stále pochopení dynamické reakce stromů na aktuální zesílený klimatický dopad stále docela komplikované. Významný vliv mají také další faktory jako věk stromu nebo sociální postavení jedince v porostu, použitá lesnická opatření, nadmořská výška nebo i jiné místní podmínky na stanovišti. Podmínky prostředí/povětrnosti mají přímý vliv na dynamiku tvorby xylému a floému, ale také na buněčnou anatomii. Tato disertační práce je zaměřena na citlivost smrku ztepilého a buku lesního na podmínky prostředí a lokální klimatické podmínky v konkrétních letech předcházející dekády (2010 – 2020). Hlavním cílem této disertační práce byl i) monitoring tvorby xylému a floému v rámci nově se tvořícího letokruhu a ii) fenotypová plasticita anatomické stavby xylému a floému za účelem interpretace jejich vztahu prostředí/místní klimatické podmínky. Tato doktorská disertační práce je sestavena ze čtyř samostatných případových studií na fenotypovou plasticitu a adaptační reakci jedinců smrku ztepilého a buku lesního na třech výzkumných plochách v České republice (Rájec-Němčice, Bílý Kříž a Křivina) a dvou ve Slovinsku (Panška reka a Menina Planina). Tyto výzkumné plochy se nachází v odlišných nadmořských výškách zahrnujících široký rozsah místních klimatických podmínek a stáří stromů. První dvě publikace jsou založeny na 8leté analýze (2010 –2017), zatímco zbývající dvě se zabývají výzkumem vlivu lokálních klimatických podmínek na smrk ztepilý a buk lesní v roce 2020 a v roce 2018. Konkrétně, rok 2020 byl charakteristický přítomností srážek během vegetačního období včetně letního období, zatímco 2018 byl klasifikován jako teplý a suchý rok, především během letních měsíců od července po srpen. První studie (Publikace I) předkládá doklady aklimatizační reakce a přítomnost tlustší buněčné stěny u letních tracheid, tj. větší odolnost vůči kavitaci u mladých jedinců smrku rostoucích na suchých a mokrých mezofilních stanovištích lesa. Druhá studie (Publikace II) obdobně prokázala, že anatomické znaky floému u obou druhů na stanovištích v České republice a Slovinsku vykazovaly vysokou citlivost na srážkové úhrny a teplotu vzduchu. Třetí studie (Publikace III) demonstrovala nárůst rychlosti ročního přírůstu vlivem probírek v porostech juvenilních jedinců smrku ztepilého; na druhou stranu, časování a trvání fenologických fází tvorby xylému a floému byly téměř identické mezi plochami s redukovaným a neredukovaným počtem jedinců. Čtvrtá studie (Publikace IV) sledovala vliv věku mezi mladými a dospělými jedinci buku lesního. Publikace I a II zdůraznily také potřebu zahrnout do budoucích studií také vliv typů a vlastností půd, protože mají velký vliv na dostupnost vody na stanovišti. Abstract:

Norway beech (Picea abies (L.) H. Karst.) and European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) are the two most important tree species of Central European submontane and montane regions. Even though both species present high phenotypic plasticity variation, they have been found by several researchers and models to be susceptible to climate change impact and highly sensitive to ongoing warming and reduction in precipitation during the growing season. Therefore, concerns have been raised about the resilience and survival of these species across a large part of their distribution due to the impact of climate change. However, these two species differ in their life strategies and adaptive responses to environmental and weather conditions. Despite the extended research, understanding trees' dynamic response to the recently amplified climate impact conditions is still quite complex. Other factors, such as trees' age and status, forest management practices, altitude, or other local site conditions, have a significant influence, too. Environmental/weather conditions directly influence the dynamics of xylem and phloem formation, as well as cell anatomy. The thesis aimed to address Norway spruce and European beech trees' sensitivity to environmental/weather conditions in certain years during the previous (2010 – 2020) decade. The main objective of the thesis was i) monitoring of intra-annual xylem and phloem formation and ii) phenotypic plasticity adjustments of xylem and phloem anatomy to interpret their environmental/weather relationships. This Doctoral thesis is composed of four individual case studies focusing on the phenotypic plasticity and adaptation response of Norway spruce and European beech trees in three study sites in the Czech Republic (Rájec Němčice, Bílý Kříž, and Křivina) and two locations in Slovenia (Panška reka, and Menina Planina). These sites are located at different altitudes, covering a broad range of weather conditions and tree ages. The first two publications are based on an 8-year analysis (2010 – 2017), while the other two examine the influence of weather conditions on Norway spruce and European beech trees in 2020 and 2018, respectively. More specifically, 2020 was characterised by the presence of precipitation during the growing season, including the summer period, while in contrast, 2018 was attributed as a warm and dry year, especially during the summer months of July – August. The first study in the xylem anatomy (Publication I) revealed traces of acclimatisation response and the presence of thicker cell wall thickness on the latewood tracheids, i.e. higher cavitation resistance, of young Norway spruces trees growing on a dry-mesic forest relevant to a wet-mesic forest area. The second study (Publication II) likewise indicated that phloem anatomy traits in both species, located in the Czech Republic and Slovenia, displayed high sensitivity to precipitation and temperature. The third study (Publication III) demonstrated an increase in the annual growth rate due to pre-commercial thinning on the juvenile Norway spruce trees; however, the timings and duration of xylem and phloem phenological phases were almost identical between the thinned and the unthinned trees. The fourth study (Publication IV) highlighted the age effect between young and adult European beech trees and the observed differences due to trees' age. Publications I and II emphasised the importance of including soil types and properties in future studies, which greatly affect water availability at the site. This Doctoral thesis presents results that can assist the forestry and wood society in gaining a deeper understanding of climate change's impact on the phenotypic plasticity and acclimatisation of these two economically and ecologically most important species of European temperate forests.
