Gross National Happiness and other alternative indicators of countries' development in comparison with GDP

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá analýzou konceptu Hrubé národní štěstí. Jsou zde konkrétně shrnuty základy a původ indexu, také současná podoba měření štěstí ve světě, která vychází z indexu. Úvodní část práce objasňuje pojmy a souvislosti, které jsou důležité k pochopení problematiky. Navíc práce v obecné rovině zmiňuje další ukazatele lidského rozvoje Giniho Index a Index lidského rozvoje. Aby byla práce objektivní komparací dvou hlavních ukazatelů Hrubého národního štěstí a Hrubého domácího produktu, jsou zahrnuty i kapitoly obsahující kritiku těchto ukazatelů. Na tuto teoretickou část navazuje analýza naměřených hodnot obou indexů ve vybraných zemích. Země byly zvoleny dle Zprávy o štěstí z roku 2020, která zahrnuje jak hodnoty HDP, tak hodnoty naměřeného štěstí. Jako vhodná metoda byla zvolena regresní analýza. V této analýze jsou jasně viditelné výsledky ukazující že příjmy mají vliv na pociťované štěstí, avšak nejsou jediným ovlivňujícím faktorem. V závěru práce je zahrnuta diskuze a zodpovězení výzkumné otázky.

Abstract:

The work deals with the analysis of the concept of Gross National Happiness. It specifically summarizes the basics and origins of the index, as well as the current form of measuring happiness in the world, which is based on the GNH index. The introductory part of the thesis clarifies the concepts and contexts that are important for understanding the issue. In addition, the work generally mentions other indicators of human development, the Gini Index and the Human Development Index. In order for the work to be an objective comparison of the two main indicators of Gross National Happiness and Gross Domestic Product, chapters containing a critique of these indicators are also included. This theoretical part is followed by an analysis of the measured values of both indices in selected countries. The countries were selected according to the 2020 Happiness Report, which includes both GDP values and measured happiness values. Regression analysis was chosen as a suitable method. In this analysis, the results are clearly visible, showing that income has an effect on perceived happiness, but is not the only deflator. The conclusion of the thesis includes a discussion and answering a research question.
