Translation of Maupassant's novel Bel-Ami from the perspective of comparative stylistic o Vinay and Darbelnet and deforming tendencies of Berman

Abstract:

The theoretical part of the thesis presents the meaning and origin of the word “translation,” analyses approaches to artistic and pragmatic texts, describes the bilingualism of the translator and introduces selected translation theories and approaches. The practical part focuses on three Czech renderings of Guy de Maupassant’s novel Bel-Ami (1892): translations by Václav Hladík (1910), Břetislav Štorm (1967) and Dana Melanová (1999). They are analysed here with the use of comparative stylistics of Jean-Paul Vinay and Jean Darbelnet as well as deforming tendencies of translation of Antoine Berman. The categories of comparative stylistics and deforming tendencies are supplied with concrete examples from these translations, each illustrating individual approaches. These are not translation methods but studies of translations from different perspectives. The conclusion evaluates all the three translations as very successful, in line with demands and expectations at their respective times of publication. Hladík’s translation captures the poetics and stylistics of the novel but, due to great number of literally translated passages and adverbial participles, it is somewhat archaizing. Štorm’s approach, the author argues, captures Maupassant’s novelistic style the best, although the translations of street names and other place names, while in keeping with the contemporary norm, reduce the reader’s experience and may be considered ethnocentric. Dana Melanová’s translation is undoubtedly the most enjoyable for today’s reader. Melanová managed to translate the proper names systematically and to keep the thread of the narrative and readability although partly at the price of eliminating the stylistic features of the original. Each translator approaches translating on the basis of his or her abilities, experience, knowledge and conscientiousness. Every translation is an original.

Abstract:

Teoretická část práce představuje význam a původ slova překlad, rozebírá přístup k uměleckým a pragmatickým textům, popisuje bilingvismus překladatele, nastiňuje některé překladatelské teorie a přístupy. Praktická část se zabývá rozborem třech překladů Maupassantova Miláčka (1892) za pomocí srovnávací stylistiky Jean- Paula Vinayho a Jeana Darbelneta a deformačních tendencí Antoina Bermana. Jedná se překlady Václava Hladíka (1910), Břetislava Štorma (1967) a Dany Melanové (1999). Snahou bylo ke kategoriím srovnávací stylistiky a deformačních tendencí vybrat příklady, které jednotlivé přístupy ilustrují. Nejedná se o překladatelské metody, nýbrž o studii překladů z různých pohledů. Závěr práce hodnotí všechny tři překlady jako velmi zdařilé, v souladu s překladatelskými požadavky doby jejich uveřejnění. Hladíkův překlad vystihuje poetiku i stylistiku románu, ovšem vzhledem k používání velkého množství doslovných překladů a přechodníků je již poněkud archaizující. Štormův přístup, dle našeho názoru, nejlépe vystihuje Maupassantův novelistický styl, i když překlady jmen ulic a míst v rámci dobové normy ochuzují čtenáře a lze je považovat za etnocentrické. Bezpochyby nejčtivější pro dnešního čtenáře je překlad Dany Melanové, která si systematicky poradila s překladem vlastních jmen, udržela linii výpravnosti a čtivosti, avšak částečně na úkor eliminace stylistických rysů originálu. Nelze opomenout, že každý překladatel přistupuje k překladu dle svých schopností, zkušeností, znalostí a poctivosti. Každý překlad je originál.
