The prefixation of motion verbs in Czech

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce bylo prozkoumat a charakterizovat význam a funkci prefixů u sloves pohybu v českém jazyce. Naše hypotéza před začátkem výzkumu zněla následovně: prefixy systematicky vyjadřují trajektorie, po kterých probíhá pohyb vyjádřený kořeny slov. Např.: od-belhat se = dostat se pryč belháním, pře-jít = do-stat se chůzí přes něco, s-lézt = dostat se lezením dolů. K ověření systematičnosti prostorových významů těchto i jiných prefixů jsme sestavili databázi příkladů, kte-ré obsahují prefigovaná slovesa pohybu. Dále jsme si položili otázku, zda lze vý-znam prefixů charakterizovat pomocí parametrů místa a směru. Např. prefix v(e)- často vyjadřuje pohyb na místo, které je uvnitř (ve-jít, v-běhnout do místnosti), kdežto prefix pře- často představuje pohyb přes nějaké místo (pře-jít, pře-běhnout přes most). Zajímalo nás, zda i jiné prefixy sdílejí vztah ke stejné lokaci, ale každý z prefixů vyjadřuje k dané lokaci odlišný pohyb. V naší práci jsme popsali, proč se tato úvaha potvrdila.

Abstract:

The aim of the bachelor thesis was to investigate and characterize the meaning and function of prefixes for verbs of motion in the Czech language. Our hypothesis be-fore starting the research was as follows: prefixes systematically express the trajec-tories along which the movement expressed by the roots of words takes place. E. g. od-belhat se = get away by limping, pře-jít = get over something by walking, s-lézt = get down by climbing. To verify the systematicity of the spatial meanings of these and other prefixes, we compiled a database of examples that contain prefixed verbs of motion. Next, we asked ourselves whether the meaning of prefixes can be characterized using the parameters of place and direction. The prefix v(e)- often expresses movement to a place that is inside (ve-jít, v-běhnout do místnosti), while the prefix pře- often represents movement across a place (pře-jít, pře-běhnout přes most). We were interested in whether other prefixes also share a relationship to the same location, but each of the prefixes expresses a different movement to the given location. In our work, we described why this reasoning was confirmed.
