Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá extenzivním čtením jako nástrojem k motivování studentů ke čtení v angličtině. Zaměřuje se na zkoumání postojů ke čtení v generaci tzv. digitálních domorodců, u nichž byla zkoumána motivace k extenzivnímu čtení v kontextu digitálního prostředí. Stěžejním tématem této diplomové práce je vztah studentů k digitálním materiálům a ke čtení v angličtině a způsoby jejich motivování ze strany učitelů. Respondenty byli studenti tří gymnázií a jejich učitelé. Teoretická část představuje hlavní teoretické koncepty a dosavadní výzkum týkající se extenzivního čtení. Jsou zde popsány typické přístupy a strategie využívané při podpoře a rozvíjení příležitostí pro extenzivní četbu a role motivace a jejího pozitivního i negativního dopadu na čtenářské dovednosti a pokročilost. Posledním zkoumaným oddílem je přístup k digitálnímu čtení u dotazovaných studentů. V empirické části této práce je popsán a analyzován potenciál digitálních zařízení pro posílení čtenářských dovedností a zvýšení motivace ke čtení v angličtině. Bylo provedeno dotazníkové šetření u studentů a jejich učitelů, aby jejich postoje byly porovnány. Dalším nástrojem kvalitativní části výzkumu byla metoda zvaná ohnisková skupina (focus group), která umožnila získat hlubší vhled do problematiky u vybrané skupiny respondentů. Tato studie přináší nové pohledy na čtenářovy zájmy, přání a preference. Závěrem byla porovnána a zpracována zjištění kvalitativního a kvantitativního výzkumu. Výsledky této studie přinášejí některé podněty a pedagogické implikace využitelné při výuce anglického jazyka v ČR.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with extensive reading as a tool to develop students’ motivation to read in English. The study focuses on the attitudes of the digital natives towards reading in English and their motivation to extensive reading which was examined in the context of the digital age. Central to the entire study are learners’ attitudes towards reading of digital materials and reading in English. Furthermore, teachers of the respondents provide their perspectives on the tools they use to enhance their students’ motivation to read in English. Students of three grammar schools and their teachers participated in the research study. In the theoretical part main concepts of previous extensive reading research are introduced. Typical reading strategies and approaches adopted to provide learners with a wide range of opportunities for reading are described. The role of motivation and its positive and negative impacts on learners’ skills on increasing their proficiency are thoroughly considered. The last area under scrutiny is the attitude of the respondents towards the digital aspect of reading. In the empirical part of the research the potential of digital devices as a tool to enhance students’ reading skills and to increase their motivation to read in English is described. Questionnaire research was conducted to be enable comparison from both teachers’ and students’ perspectives. A focus group session was organised to gather the qualitative data exploring the attitudes of the respondents. This study provides new insights into readers’ habits and preferences. The qualitative and quantitative data were analysed and processed. In conclusion, the findings of this study are summarised and several educational implications for ELT practice in the Czech Republic are suggested.
