The comparative adavantages of the economic environment of Swiss cantons

Abstract:

Diplomová práce pojednává o komparativních výhodách jednotlivých kantonů Švýcarska. Cílem práce je kantony porovnat, zohlednit jejich individuální specifika a objektivně zhodnotit jejich hlavní komparativní výhody. K těmto závěrům je použito jednak PEST analýzy a na konci podkapitol také analýzy SWOT. Po metodologickém úvodu je nejdříve pozorováno Švýcarsko v globálním měřítku, aby pak následně mohly být analyzovány jednotlivé kantony. V první části je detailně pohlíženo na čtyři vybrané kantony, které jsou svými charakteristikami jedinečné. Jsou to: Graubünden, Ticino, Zürich a Geneve. Poté jsou analyzovány čtyři skupiny kantonů: východní, centrální a francouzské Švýcarsko a kantony území řeky Aare. Pro větší přehlednost jsou všechny kantony poté komparovány z hlediska nejdůležitějších ekonomických ukazatelů, ze kterých vyplývají závěry jejich komparativních výhod. Závěrečná kapitola pojednává o Česko-švýcarské obchodní spolupráci, která obsahuje nejen vývoj a strukturu vzájemné obchodní bilance, ale také přímé zahraniční investice. Jedním z dosažených závěrů je významnost koncentrace oborových specializací, ve kterých lze najít i jeden z faktorů úspěšnosti švýcarské ekonomiky. Další problematika, které se v průběhu práce stala jedním z určujících faktorů komparativních výhod kantonů, je diverzita daňového zatížení.

Abstract:

The thesis discusses the comparative advantages of the different cantons of Switzerland. The aim is to compare the cantons, highlight their specifics and examine their main comparative advantages. In order to achieve this goal both PEST analysis and, at the end of each subchapter, SWOT analysis are used. After a methodological introduction Switzerland is first reviewed at a national level, so that it can be subsequently differentiated into individual cantons or groups of cantons. The first part reviews in detail four selected cantons, which are unique in their characteristics, i.e. Grisons, Ticino, Zurich and Geneve. Subsequently four groups of cantons are examined, namely Eastern, Central and French Switzerland as well as the cantons alongside the river Aare. For better clarity, all cantons are then compared based on major economic indicators, which allow conclusions on their comparative advantages. The final chapter deals with the Czech-Swiss trade cooperation, including not only the development and structure of mutual trade but also foreign direct investments. One of the conclusions reached is the significance of industry concentration and specialization, which represent one of the success factors of the Swiss economy. Another economic driver, which proves to be one of the determinants of cantons' comparative advantages, is the diversified tax burden.
