Data as a commodity: changes of information capitalism

Abstract:

V této bakalářské diplomové práci se zabývám tématem role informací a dat v informačním kapitalismu a dohledovém kapitalismu, proměnami informačního kapitalismu a odborným diskurzem k těmto dvěma konceptům. Tato moje práce sestává ze dvou částí a diskuze. V první části představuji koncept informačního kapitalismu jakožto pojem reflektující informatizaci moderní společnosti a s ní spojené ekonomické, technologické i politické proměny a mapuji diskurz týkající se informačního kapitalismu. Ve druhé části se zaměřuji na koncept dohledového kapitalismu Shoshany Zuboffové, kde popisuji logiku dohledového kapitalismu, způsoby extrakce a zpracovávání behaviorálních dat. Následuje diskuze, ve které srovnávám tyto dva koncepty, shrnuji hlavní zjištění, a zahrnuta je zde i kritika Zuboffové.

Abstract:

In this bachelor's thesis I deal with the role of information and data in information capitalism and surveillance capitalism, changes in information capitalism and academic discourse about these two concepts. The bachelor thesis consists of two parts and a discussion. In the first part, I present the concept of information capitalism as a concept reflecting the informatization of modern society and the associated economic, technological, and political changes, and map the discourse about information capitalism. In the second part, I focus on the concept of Shoshana Zuboff’s surveillance, where I describe the logic of surveillance capitalism, methods of extraction and processing of behavioral data. Following is a discussion in which I make a comparison of these two concepts, summarize the main findings and include criticism of Zuboff.
