Astrological Interpretations of Mithraism: Their Origins Motivations, Credibility and Plausibility

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je ukázat mithraismus, jako jedno z náboženství pozdní antiky a zároveň představit jeden z významných současných proudů jeho zkoumání: astrologické interpretace. Po zmapování počátků těchto badatelských počinů a představení nejvýznamnějších představitelů a teorií, uplatněných v této oblasti, se dále zabývá dvěma hlavními problémy. Prvním z nich je problém motivace těchto interpretací, co vedlo k jejich vzniku a rozšíření. Druhým je otázka věrohodnosti a opodstatněnosti těchto teorií. Astrologické interpretace vychází z několika základních premis. První premisou je text Porfyria z Tyru De Antro Nympharum, který nabízí určité narážky na astrologické motivy. Další premisou je přímá spojitost motivů na tauroktonii (nejdůležitějším mithraistickém vyjádření) se souhvězdími známými již v Antice. Poslední jsou další astrologické narážky v ostatních ikonografických motivech a v iniciačním řádu mithraismu. Astrologické interpretace nepředstavují jednotný proud výkladu a kvalita jednotlivých prací také se velmi různí. Nejdůležitější osobou v tomto směru je Roger Beck, který se astrologickými interpretacemi mithraismu zabývá už od 70. let 20. století. Ve své práci se pokouší reflektovat všechny dostupné informace a materiál a zároveň zapojovat i poznatky z jiných vědních oborů, jako například statistika nebo kognitivní věda.

Abstract:

My intent is to show Mithraism as one of many religions in the late antiquity and to introduce one of the main current approaches to the study of this phenomenon: astrological interpretations. After mapping thoughts, suggestions and theories of the most important scholars of the field, there are two issues which have to be taken into account. First, what is the motivation which stands behind those theories, what brings them to life? Second cause of troubles is its credibility and plausibility. There are few premises which are the astrological interpretations usually based on. Neoplatonist philosophical treatise of Porphyry, De Antro Nypharum, containing some references to astrology as well as the connection that could be made between some motives (themes) pictured on tauroctony and particular constellations (thanks to the fact that they were well known at that time). Not to mention these "hints" in the rest of iconographical material or initiatory rituals of the cult. I also try to show that astrological interpretations are not unanimous and that its quality vary and that they are not equally elaborate. Leading scholar of the field Roger Beck devotes himself to astrological interpretations of mithraism since 1970s and in his monographies and articles not only that he uses all the information and material accesible but also tries to bring into play other scientific methods as statistics or cognitive science.
