Transcultural Christology at an Islamic Reform Movement in Colonial India: The Conception of Jesus in Ghulam Ahmad's Works

Abstract:

Ghulam Mirza Ahmad is the founder of the Islamic Reformation Ahmadiyya Movement. He was born in the 19th century, which for Muslims in India meant a definitive loss of government. In these conditions he recognized the approaching end of the time and formulated christology - a teaching about the meaning of Jesus - which this work deals with. The aim of this work was to specify this christology, to find deviations from the Sunni interpretations, to observe the influences that could influence its formation and to characterize the present non-Islamic parallels. Ahmad's four selected works: Four Questions by Mr. Sirajuddin, a Christian, and Its Answers (1897); Lecture Ludhiana (1905); Fountain of Christianity (1906) and Jesus in India (1908) were in this work subjected to a discourse analysis and were following the figure of Jesus. Differences were found in the mission of Jesus, his death on the cross, in his next life and the second coming of Jesus derived from it. Ghulam Ahmad was influenced in the formation of the movement, for example by his participation in public debates and the relationship with the British Government, which the work specifies. Ahmad has intergrated in his vision of Jesus, Christian as well as Hindu convictions. Based on these findings, we can better understand the syncretic religious movements and see how are shaped the key figures of these movements.

Abstract:

Ghulám Mirzá Ahmad je zakladateľom islamského reformného hnutia ahmadíja. Narodil sa do 19. storočia, ktoré pre moslimov v Indii znamenalo definitívnu stratu vlády. V týchto podmienkach rozpoznal blížiaci sa koniec sveta a sformuloval christológiu – učenie o význame Ježiša – ktorou sa táto práca zaoberá. Cieľom práce bolo túto christológiu špecifikovať, nájsť v nej odchýlky od sunnitských výkladov, vysledovať vplyvy, ktoré mohli pôsobiť na jej sformovanie a charakterizovať v nej prítomné mimoislamské paralely. Ahmadove štyri vybrané diela: Odpovede na štyri otázky kresťana, pána Siradžuddína (1897); Ludhijánská prednáška (1905); Prameň kresťanstva (1906) a Ježiš v Indii (1908) boli v práci podrobené diskurzívnej analýze a sledovali v nich postavu Ježiša. Rozdiely boli nájdené v Ježišovom poslaní, smrti na kríži, v nasledujúcom živote Ježiša a z neho vyplývajúceho druhého príchodu. Ghuláma Ahmada vo formovaní hnutia ovplyvnili napríklad jeho účasti na verejných diskusiách a vzťah k britskej vláde, ktoré práca bližšie špecifikuje. Ahmad do svojich predstáv o Ježišovi zapojil kresťanské, snáď i hinduistické presvedčenia. Na základe zistených údajov je možné lepšie porozumieť synkretickým náboženským hnutiam a pochopiť, ako sa formujú predstavy kľúčových postáv týchto hnutí.
