Media as part of the democratic public sphere in view of Jürgen Habermas

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá podstatou a úlohou tradičních masových médií v demokratickém veřejném prostoru a jejich potenciálem úspěšně vykonávat svou nezastupitelnou funkci v současné demokratické společnosti. Primárním cílem práce je komplexně prozkoumat otázku, zda pod vlivem zejména ekonomických a politických tlaků mohou dnešní sdělovací prostředky být opozicí vůči politické moci a místem kriticky činné veřejnosti, tak jak očekává tradiční liberálně-demokratická společnost. Práce při tom vychází z myšlenek Jürgena Habermase, který média považuje za součást veřejné sféry, kde se občané střetávají prostřednictvím racionální argumentace. Média svou proměnou nabývají na síle a tento prostor postupně dobývají. Ve výsledku tato skutečnost může znamenat až ohrožení demokracie.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the nature and the function of traditional mass media in a democratic public sphere and their potential to successfully perform their essential role in a democratic society. The primary aim of this work is to comprehensively examine the question of whether under the influence of specifically economical and political pressures, the mass media could serve as an opposition to political power and as a space for a critically active public as a tra-ditional liberal-democratic society expects. The thesis is mainly based on the ideas of Jürgena Habermas, who considers media to be part of the public sphere, where citizens, through ratio-nal argumentation, come together. As a consequence of their change, the media is gaining strength and is gradually conquering the public sphere. As a result, this reality may indicate a threat to democracy.
