Men on Greek Stelai of the Classical Period

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá mužskými postavami na náhrobních stélách z Attiky klasického období (od 30. let 5. do 20. let 4. století př. Kr.). Reliéfní náhrobní stély jsou významnými památkami antického řeckého sochařství, přestože jsou to památky anonymní. Umělci, kteří je tvořili, stáli velmi blízko umělcům oficiálních památek, jimž a jejichž okruhům se také některé významné stély připisují. V úvodní části práce je přehledovou formou podán obecný výklad o typologickém a tematickém vývoji figurálně zdobených řeckých stél od jejich vzniku po helénistické období. V souvislosti s figurálními motivy je krátce pojednáno o problematice výrazovosti (kontakt očí, gesta, mimika). Ve své hlavní části se práce zaměřuje na různé typy mužských postav, které se na reliéfech stél v klasickém období vyskytují méně často, než postavy ženské. Na základě rozboru vybraných stél můžeme vidět, že mezi archaickým a klasickým obdobím neexistoval žádný výrazný zlom, ale naopak klasické stély rozvíjejí typy a motivy vytvořené dříve pouze při proměně stylové. Zatímco zpočátku dávají klasické stély přednost typizovanému zobrazování postav, ke konci 4. století sem pronikají známky individualizace. Náhrobní stély dobře dokumentují rozvinutou ikonografii řeckého umění klasické doby, v čemž rovněž spočívá jejich význam.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the motif of a man on funeral stelai from Attica in the Classical period (from 430’s to 320’s BC). The relief stelai are important objects of ancient Greek sculpture, though anonymous. The sculptors who made them stood close to the sculptors of the official state monuments, that is why many of the best stelai are frequently attributed to the latter or their pupils. In the introductory part of the thesis there is a general comment about the typological and thematical development of Greek figure decorated stelai from the origins to the Hellenistic age. In connection with the figural motives, the expressions are dealed with shortly (eye contact, gestures, face-play). The main part of the thesis focuses on various types of men’s figures – they are less common on the stelai of the Classical period than the women‘s ones. On the basis of analyzing the most important classical stelai we can see there is no distinct break between the Archaic and the Classical period – on the contrary, the classical stelai continue to use the types and motives of their archaic predecessors having changed only the style. While at the beginning the classical stelai prefer typification, at the end of the 4th century there are present also some personal features in the images. The grave stelai well document the advanced iconography of classical Greek art, which even emphasizes their importance.
