The grotesque imagery of the body in the film Turks Fruit by Paul Verhoeven

Abstract:

Tato práce analyzuje groteskní zobrazování těla ve filmu Turks fruit od nizozemského režiséra Paula Verhoevena z roku 1973. Analýza vychází z teorie groteskního těla, formulované slavným ruským teoretikem Michailem Bachtinem v jeho zásadní práci Rabelais and His World, vydané původně v roce 1965. V analýze se zaměřuji na hlavní motivy groteskního zobrazování těla, jakými jsou sexualita, nemoc, tělesný úpadek a smrt, jídlo a pití, a skatologie.

Abstract:

This thesis analyses the grotesque imagery of the body in the film Turks Fruit by the Dutch director Paul Verhoeven from 1973. The analysis is based on the theory of the grotesque body developed by the famous Russian theoretician Michail Bakhtin in his crucial work Rabelais and His World, originally published in 1965. In my analysis I focus on the main motifs of the grotesque imagery of the body, such as sexuality, disease, decay and death, eating and drinking, and scatology.
