Constitution of Meaning and Social Criticism in the Artworks Involving Visual and Verbal Layer in Public Space.

Abstract:

Tato magisterská práce se zabývá tvorbou významu ve vizuálně-verbálních dílech umístěných do veřejného prostoru, zejména tím, jak se na této tvorbě podíly tři základní složky díla: jazykové sdělení, vizuální sdělení a umístění (kontext) díla. Dále se pak zabývá společenskou kritikou v těchto dílech. Práce je rozdělená do tří kapitol. První kapitola popisuje vztah těchto děl a společenské kritiky a poukazuje na to, že guerillová vizuálně-verbální díla mají vysokou tendenci k tomu, aby vyjádřovala společenskou kritiku. Druhá kapitola určuje na základě srovnání s příbuznými typy děl interpretační priority a postupy. Třetí kapitola je věnována intepretacím konkrétních děl tří vybraných autorů: Banksyho, Jenny Holzerové a Tima. V závěru jsou shrnuta zjištění získaná z těchto interpretací, dále jsou formulovány obecné tendence vyskytující se v těchto dílech a je zhodnocena relevance využití jednotlivých navržených interpretačních strategií.

Abstract:

This MA thesis focuses on the constitution of meaning in visual-verbal artworks in public space, mainly on the way in which three basic layers of the works (textual layer, visual layer and context) contribute to their meaning. It also deals with social criticism in these works. The thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter aims at the depiction of the relationship between this kind of works and social criticism and it points out that guerrilla visual-verbal artworks have a considerable tendency to articulate social criticism. The second chapter defines priorities and strategies in reading of these works, based on their comparison with similar kinds of works. The third chapter focuses on the interpretations of particular artworks of three chosen authors: Banksy, Jenny Holzer and Timo. In the conclusion, the outcomes of these interpretations are summed up, general tendencies reappearing in these works are depicted and relevance of use of the proposed interpretation strategies is evaluated.
