P: Typology of framework houses in Toruń

Abstract:

Fotografie dokumentují hrázděné domy které jsou typickým dědictvím v krajině Toruňa, města v severním Polsku, které bylo na konci 19. století pevností na okraji Německé říše. Určené jako dočasné byty, které byly rychle postavené a ještě rychleji zbourané v případě vojenského konfliktu. Dřevostavby měly splňovat přísná pravidla městského rozvoje ozbrojeného města. V dnešní době mnoho z těchto domů stále tvoří jednou s nejvyšší koncentrací budov postavených z cihel a dřeva na světě a také definují vizuální charakter města.

Abstract:

The photographs document framework houses that are a typical legacy in the landscape of Toruń, a town in northern Poland that was a fortress on the edge of the German Empire at the end of the 19th century. Intended as temporary dwellings, they used to be built very quickly and were supposed to be as quickly demolished in case of military conflict. The wooden buildings had to meet the strict rules of urban development of a fortified city. Today, many of these houses still make part of one of the highest concentrations of red brick timber buildings in the world and also define the visual character of the city.
