Abstract:

Tato magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá názory Johna Donna na víru a dobovou vědu. Pro hlubší porozumění danému období se první dvě kapitoly věnují všeobecnému přehledu počátků moderní vědy a dávají je do souvislosti s náboženským přesvědčením a důležitostí nadpřirozeného zjevení, které leží mimo možnosti jakéhokoli vědeckého dokazování přírodních věd. Při zhodnocení všeobecných znaků daného období je použito více akademických zdrojů a poznatky jsou shrnuty s cílem rekonstruovat výzvy, které „nová věda“ se svými objevy v pozorování přírody představovala pro jednotnou interpretaci Písma a praxe osobního uctívání. John Donne byl nesmírně vzdělaný člověk, jeho zájmy zahrnovaly především medicínu a astronomii. Velmi pozorně sledoval tehdejší vědeckou debatu. Jako umělec a kněz reflektoval měnící se svět ve své náboženské poezii, častokrát směřoval k nedůvěře a skepticizmu, avšak neustále se držel svého křesťanského přesvědčení. Vědecké myšlenky nalezly cestu do jeho tvorby v podobě metaforických a řečnických figur, právě na ně se zaměřuje interpretace jeho básní. Jádrem práce je však důkladná analýza Donnových náboženských kontemplací s názvem Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions. Ty představují nejen duchovní autobiografii, ale i studii, která používá metodu, pomocí které je izolován vzorek k objevení hlubších souvislostí celku. V tomto případě je vzorkem sám Donne bojující s dlouhodobě trvající chorobou. Tuto situaci autor využívá jako příležitost na vytvoření si vlastní metody uctívání a rozhovoru s Bohem.

Abstract:

This Master Diploma thesis explores John Donne’s views on faith and contemporary science. To understand the period he lived in better, the first two chapters are dedicated to general survey of the beginnings of the early modern science and put them into relation with religious conviction and the importance of supernatural revelation, which is situated outside any proof natural science can offer. Various academics sources are used to trace the basic characteristics of the era and try to sum it up in a short and comprehensible way to illustrate how the “new science” with its new discoveries in natural observations brought a new challenges for uniting the scriptural interpretation and personal devotional practice. John Donne, an incredibly learned man, whose area of scientific interests included mainly medicine and astronomy, followed this debate closely. As an artist and priest, he evaluated the changing world in his divine poetry, often to his distrust and scepticism, while still holding on to his Christian conviction. The “scientific” concepts found their way even into creative output as metaphorical and rhetorical tropes, so the interpretation is focused on that. The core of the thesis an thorough analysis of Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions, Donne’s religious contemplations. They are not a mere spiritual autobiography, but also a study using the method of isolating an individual sample to discover a deeply underlying general patterns. In this case, a sample is Donne himself and his body battling the long-term illness. This situation gives the author as an opportunity to create his own style of devotion and reasoning with God.
