Klezmer clarinet ornaments in selected 1912 recordings by Belf's orchestra

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá klezmerskými klarinetovými ornamenty, jimiž jsou zdobeny melodie, které v Evropě před první světovou válkou nahrál čtyřčlenný ansámbl (klarinet, dvoje housle a klavír) známý pod názvem "Belfův orchestr" (Belf's Romanian Orchestra; ???????? ???????? ???? ???. ?. ??????). V práci jsou nejprve prezentovány základní teze týkající se klezmerské hudby (tedy instrumentální hudby východoevropských židů) a role ornamentace v této hudbě. Poté jsou prezentovány současné hlavní zdroje informací o Belfově orchestru a jeho nahrávkách. Jádrem práce je prezentace speciálních značek vytvořených pro jednotlivé klarinetové ornamenty za účelem snadného přepisování ornamentované melodie z nahrávek do not a za účelem snazšího pronikání do pravidel klezmerského ornamentačního stylu klarinetisty Belfova orchestru. Důležitou součástí práce je - pomocí těchto speciálně vytvořených značek - sedm kompletně přepsaných ornamentovaných melodií prováděných klarinetistou na sedmi vybraných nahrávkách Belfova orchestru z roku 1912. Na základě přepisu vybraných nahrávek jsou popisovány jednotlivé ornamenty a k nim přiřazené značky a naznačen způsob, jakým lze postupovat při analyzování ornamentačního stylu a hledání jeho pravidel. V tomto ohledu je v řadě momentů významným opěrným bodem disertační práce amerického klarinetisty a muzikologa Joela Rubina.

Abstract:

This doctoral thesis is concerned with klezmer clarinet ornaments which embellish melodies recorded before the First World War by a four-member ensemble (clarinet, two violins and piano) known as "Belf's Romanian Orchestra" (???????? ???????? ???? ???. ?. ??????). To begin with, the thesis presents fundamental propositions concerning klezmer music (i.e., the instrumental music of East European Jews) and the role of ornamentation in this music. It continues with an overview of the principal sources of information available at the present time about Belf's Orchestra and its recordings. The core of the thesis resides in the presentation of a set of special signs devised to represent different clarinet ornaments in order to facilitate the transcription of ornamented melodies from historical recordings and to bring further insight into the principles of klezmer ornamentation style used by the (anonymous) clarinettist of Belf's Orchestra. The thesis includes as its integral part complete transcriptions (using these specially developed signs) of seven ornamented melodies performed by the clarinettist of Belf's Orchestra in seven selected recordings made by the ensemble in 1912. With reference to these transcriptions, the text describes different ornaments and the corresponding signs, while also suggesting a way of analysing the ornamentation style at hand and defining its underlying principles. In this respect, it builds on the approaches underpinning the doctoral thesis of the American clarinettist and musicologists Joel Rubin.
