Comparative phylogeography of the Somali-Maasai region in eastern Africa using selected rodent species as a model

Abstract:

Región Somali-Masai (predovšetkým savanové ekosystémy) patria k najmenej preskúmaným oblastiam Afriky z biogeografického hladiska; chýbajú základné genetické informácie o vnútrodruhovej a medzidruhovej štruktúre savanových organizmov. Preto je veľmi obtiažne identifikovať historické faktory (ako Plio-Pleistocéne klimatické zmeny, geomorfologické bariéry, atď.), ktoré ovplyvnili evolúciu savanovej bioty vo východnej Afrike. Drobné cicavce, predovšetkým hlodavce sú vhodným modelovým organizmom pre fylogeografické rekonštrukcie z niekoľkých dôvodov. Sú viazané na špecifický typ habitatu, majú nízku schopnosť migrovať na veľké vzdialenosti a relatívne vysokú mutačnú rýchlosť na mitochondriálnej DNA. V predkladanej dizertačnej práci som analyzovala genetickú štruktúru štyroch rodov hlodavcov, ktoré žijú predovšetkým/čiastočne v otvorených habitatoch v Somali-Masai regióne: myš (Mus, podrod Nannomys), Saccostomus, pieskomil (Gerbilliscus) a myš bodlinatá (Acomys). V prvej časti dizertácie sa zameriavam na genetickú diverzitu modelových taxónov. Všetky študované rody majú endemické genetické línie v Somali-Masai regióne, niektoré z nich predstavujú nové druhy a mali by byť podrobené integratívnej taxonomickej revízii. V druhej časti prinášam zoznam deviatich fosílií, ktoré môžu byť použité ako referenčné kalibračné body pre molekulárne datovanie hlodavcov. V tretej časti rekonštruujem históriu savany Somali-Masai a identifikujem najdôležitejšie dlhodobé geografické bariéry pre tok génov (napr. horské masívy, púšte, paleo-jazerá), ktoré hrali významnú rolu v evolúcii savanových ekosystémov vo východnej Afrike počas Plio-Pleistocénu. Výsledky mojej porovnávacej fylogeografickej štúdie môžu pomôcť objasniť evolučnú históriu ďalších savanových organizmov, vrátane nášho vlastného predchodcu (rod Homo). Pretože množstvo zásadných lokalít pre štúdium ľudskej evolúcie je práve v Somali-Masai regióne.

Abstract:

The Somali-Masai region, and especially its non-forested savanna-like ecosystems, is one of the least known ecoregions of Africa from biogeographic point of view. For example, information on genetic structure within specialized species or among closely related species is entirely missing; therefore making it difficult to assess which historical factors (e.g. Plio- Pleistocene climate fluctuations, geomorphological barriers, etc.) have influenced the evolution of savanna biota in this part of Eastern Africa. Small mammals, and especially rodents, are suitable model for phylogeographic reconstructions, because they are tightly linked to specific habitat type, have low dispersal ability and relatively high substitution rate of mitochondrial DNA. In the present PhD study, I have analyzed for the first time the genetic structure of four rodent genera preferring open habitats and living (at least partly) in Somali-Masai region: pygmy mice (Mus), pouched mice (Saccostomus), gerbils (Gerbilliscus), and spiny mice (Acomys). For the first part of the thesis, I summarized the genetic diversity of model taxa and showed that in each genus studied there are lineages endemic to Somali-Masai region. Some of them might correspond to new species which should be further analysed by integrative taxonomic revision. For second part, I provided a revised list of nine fossils that could be considered as reference constraints for molecular clock calibrations for murid rodents. Finally, for the third part I reconstructed the history of Somali-Masai savanna, including the identification of the most important long-term geographical barriers of gene flow (e.g. mountain chains, aridity belts, paleo-lakes), which have played an important role in the evolution of savanna ecosystems in Eastern Africa especially during the Plio-Pleistocene. Results of the comparative phylogeographic study can shed light also on evolutionary history of other savanna-living organisms, including our own ancestors (as numerous crucial localities for studies of human evolution are located in the Somali-Masai region).
