Pain as a metaphor within performance art

Abstract:

Bakalářská diplomová práce Bolest jako metafora v rámci performance umění se věnuje specifické skupině performancí, v nichž se dominantním motivem nebo prostředkem vyjádření stalo překonávání psychického nebo fyzického utrpení. Klade si otázky: Jaké okolnosti vedli jejich autory k vytvoření těchto děl? Co se snažili prožitím fyzické či psychické bolesti vyjádřit? Jsou tyto práce interaktivní a mají vazbu na své publikum? Také se snaží popsat proces jejich tvorby a prezentace jednotlivých děl. Práce se na tyto otázky snaží odpovědět metodou studia odborných textů a internetových zdrojů galerií či uměleckých magazínů a uvádí konkrétní díla různých performerů pracujících s bolestí. Jako hlavního představitele uvádí Chrise Burdena a jeho dílo Shoot, které je reakcí na válku ve Vietnamu; dále díla Five day locker piece, Match piece, Fire roll a další. Další zařazení umělci jsou Valie Export a Marina Abramović.

Abstract:

Bachelor thesis Pain as a Metaphor in the Performance Art deals with specific group of performance, in which the dominant motive or mean of expression is overcoming psychological or physical suffering. The questions are: Which circumstances led the authors to create these works? What they tried by undergoing physical or mental pain to express? Are these works interactive and connected to their audience? Also tries to describe the process of their creation and presentation of the works. This work tries to answer these questions by the method of studying the texts and internet sources of galleries or art magazines and provides specific works of different performers working with pain. The main artist I mention is Chris Burden and his work Shoot, which is reaction to the war in Vietnam; further works Five Day Locker Piece, Match piece, Fire roll and more. Other included artists are Valie Export and Marina Abramović.
