Strategic Voting in Absolute Majority Runoff Systems

Abstract:

The empirical scholarly literature has not so far succeeded in describing the exact mechanism how strategic voting in majority runoff electoral systems affects the number of electoral contestants. In the context of presidential elections we therefore examine whether the number of candidates is influenced by the factors which should carry the effect according to the rational choice theory. We conclude that strategic voting is a useful concept for explaining the number of presidential candidates in majority runoff systems, although only to a limited extent.

Abstract:

Odborná empirická literatúra doposiaľ nedokázala uspokojivo popísať spôsob akým strategické hlasovanie v dvojkolových systémoch absolútnej väčšiny pôsobí na počet volebných súťažiacich. V kontexte prezidentských volieb preto skúmame či na počet kandidátov majú vplyv faktory, ktorým ho môžeme na základe teórie racionálnej voľby prisúdiť. Zisťujeme, že aj v dvojkolových systémoch absolútnej väčšiny je pri predpovedaní počtu prezidentských kandidátov strategické hlasovanie užitočným konceptom i keď len v obmedzenej miere.
