Perfectionism of mathematicaly gifted students - developmental determinants

Abstract:

The focus of the present study is on perfectionism of mathematically gifted children and its possible relations with the variables family background, personality, health problems and school success. The purpose of this study was to describe perfectionism and its typology as identified by Parker (1997) and compare the perfectionistic types in mentioned variables. Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (Frost et al., 1990) and Questionnaire of Demographic Information were administered to 183 children aged 12-15. Further BRS (Hřebíčková, 1997) and short version of Brief Symptom Inventory (Parker, 1997) were administered to 95 gifted children. Gifted children were not identified as more perfectionistic in comparison with their non-gifted peers. Cluster analysis identified three perfectionistic types in our gifted sample: non-perfectionists (21,2%), healthy perfectionists (42,2%) and dysfunctional perfectionists (36,5%). No statistically significant differences were found between the types in variables family background, personality, health problems and school success using ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis test and Chi-square test. The validity of Parker’s typology (1997) was therefore confirmed in our sample, but the study failed to find any differences between three groups in mentioned variables.

Abstract:

Predkladaná práca sa zaoberá problematikou perfekcionizmu u matematicky nadaných detí a jeho možnými súvislosťami s premennými rodinné zázemie, osobnostné charakteristiky, zdravotné problémy a školský úspech. Cieľom práce bolo zachytiť perfekcionizmus u matematicky nadaných detí, popísať jeho typológiu podľa Parkera (1997) a porovnať jednotlivé typy v spomínaných premenných. Vzorke 183 detí vo veku 12-15 rokov sme administrovali dotazníky Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (Frost et al., 1990) a Dotazník demografických údajov, z toho 95 nadaným deťom zo vzorky sme ďalej administrovali BRS (Hřebíčková, 1997) a skrátenú verziu Dotazníku zdravotných problémov (Parker, 1997). Nadané deti sa v porovnaní s deťmi z bežnej populácie nepreukázali ako viac perfekcionistické. Použitím zhlukovej analýzy sme na vzorke nadaných identifikovali tri typy nasledovne: neperfekcionisti (21,2%), funkční perfekcionisti (42,2%) a dysfunkční perfekcionisti (36,5%). Porovnanie typov použitím jednorozmernej analýzy rozptylu, Kruskal-Wallis testu a chí-kvadrátu nepreukázalo štatisticky signifikantné rozdiely v premenných rodinné zázemie, osobnostné charakteristiky, zdravotné problémy a školský úspech. Na našej vzorke nadaných sme potvrdili platnosť Parkerovej typológie (1997), z nášho výskumného šetrenia však vyplýva, že sa tieto tri typy nelíšia v ďalších skúmaných premenných.
