A Teacher's Life History: Major Changes through one's Career from the Perspective of Older Teachers

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce pojednává o životních drahách starších učitelů. Cílem této práce je popsat život a kariéru učitele, identifikovat významné změny, které se v jejím průběhu udály, a zjistit, jak tyto změny vnímají samotní učitelé. Tento kvalitativní výzkum vychází z nestrukturovaných a polostrukturovaných rozhovorů se šesti učiteli ve věku padesáti let a více, kteří ve školství pracovali alespoň dvacet let. Výzkumný vzorek tvoří učitelé, kteří vyučují různé předměty na základních a středních školách, aby bylo možno sledovat případné rozdíly a podobnosti, jež se u nich vyskytují. Do výzkumného vzorku byly zahrnuty dvě učitelky anglického jazyka s cílem zjistit, zda se jejich život a kariéra liší od respondentů ostatních, kteří vyučují: • biologii a chemii; • český jazyk; • pozemní stavitelství, rekonstrukci budov a technické kreslení; • strojírenskou technologii a základy strojnictví.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the lives and careers of older teachers. The aim of the thesis is to describe teachers’ careers, to identify the major changes which occurred throughout their long practice and to ascertain how teachers perceive those changes. This qualitative research is based on unstructured and semi-structured interviews conducted with six practising teachers at the age of fifty or more with at least twenty years of teaching experience. The research sample comprises of teachers who teach different subjects at both lower secondary and secondary schools in order to monitor possible differences and similarities between them. Two secondary school English teachers were selected to find out whether teaching English has some specifics which differ from the other respondents who teach: • Biology and Chemistry; • Czech; • Civil Engineering, Buildings Reconstruction and Technical Drawing; • Mechanical Engineering Technology and Basics of Mechanical Engineering.
