Abstract:

Tato práce se zaměřuje na etiku v díle Johna Stuarta Milla, konkrétně se pak věnuje především jeho třem dílům - Utilitarismus, O svobodě a Poddanství žen. Tyto knihy jsou především prezentací autorových klíčových postojů ke společnosti a jedinci. V první části představím život a aspekty, které Milla ovlivnily při jeho tvorbě. Druhá část se stručně zaměřuje na Millova učitele Jeremyho Benthema a dále na Millův utilitarismus. Ve svém díle Utilitarismus představuje principy, na kterých stojí, a snaží se hájit Benthamův utilitarismus. Zároveň do něj vkládá vlastní myšlenky. Hlavním cílem utilitarismu je co největší štěstí pro co největší počet lidí. Třetí část interpretuje Millův postoj ke svobodě a užitečnosti, kterou může přinést. Tato část se tedy zaměřuje na dílo O svobodě, kde Mill představuje svobodu myšlení, jednotlivce a jednání. Ve čtvrté části je představen Millův pohled na otázku rovnosti ve společnosti devatenáctého století s argumenty, proč mít rovné podmínky.

Abstract:

This work focuses on the topic of ethics in John Stuart Mill works, particularly on: Utilitarianism, On Liberty and The Subjection of Women. These books reflect Mill's attitude to society and an individual. The first part introduces his life and aspects that influenced his works. The second part focuses on Mill's mentor Jeremy Bentham and Mill's utilitarianism. In his work called Utilitarianism Mill introduces principles on which it is based and tries to defend Bentham's utilitarianism while implanting his own thoughts into it. The main goal of utilitarianism is to find happiness for as many people as possible. The third part interprets Mill's attitudes towards freedom and usefulness which it can bring. This part is focused on the work On Liberty, where Mill presents the freedom of thought, individual and action. The fourth part addresses Mill's view on the issue of equality in the society of the 19th century and arguments in favour of having them.
