Evaluation of the relationship between birth order and interbirth interval to morbidity in participants of the Brno Longitudinal Study

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na zkoumání vlivu meziporodních intervalů a pořadí narození na zdravotní stav. Analýza těchto vztahů byla provedena na datech získaných z Brněnské longitudinální (růstové) studie. Soubor dat zahrnoval 60 jedinců, kteří byli rozděleni do dvou skupin podle zdravotního stavu, přičemž každá skupina obsahovala 30 jedinců. Výsledky Mann-Whitney U testu ukazují, že byl meziporodní interval delší u nemocných jedinců, což naznačuje, že časový interval mezi porody může ovlivňovat zdraví. Nicméně, podle výsledku Fisherova exaktního testu, neexistuje mezi pořadím narození a nemocností statisticky významná závislost. Hodnota Spearmanova korelačního koeficientu vypovídá pouze o nízkém stupni přímé závislosti mezi pořadím narození a meziporodním intervalem. I přes omezený počet pozorování poskytuje tato práce poznatky, které přispívají k lepšímu pochopení vztahu mezi časovým intervalem mezi porody a zdravotním stavem účastníků studie. Výsledky implikují, že delší rozmezí mezi porody souvisí s vyšší mírou nemocnosti. Z toho důvodu je klíčové, aby se budoucí výzkumy zaměřovaly na vliv dlouhých meziporodních intervalů, neboť současné výzkumy se často soustředí pouze na kratší intervaly.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on exploring the influence of interbirth intervals and birth order on health status. The analysis of these relationships was carried out on data obtained from the Brno Growth (Longitudinal) Study. The data set included 60 individuals who were divided into two groups according to health status, with each group containing 30 individuals. The results of the Mann-Whitney U test showed that the interbirth interval was longer in the sick individuals, suggesting that the time interval between births may influence health. However, according to the result of Fisher's exact test, there is no statistically significant relationship between birth order and morbidity. The value of Spearman's correlation coefficient indicates only a low degree of direct relationship between birth order and birth spacing. Despite the limited number of observations, this thesis provides insights that contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between birth spacing and the health status of study participants. The results imply that longer intervals between births are associated with higher rates of morbidity. Therefore, it is crucial that future research focuses on the effect of long interbirth intervals, as current research often focuses only on shorter intervals.
