Vzrůstající vědecký zájem o oblast příbřežní Antarktidy v posledních desetiletích změnil vnímání tohoto kontinentu a inicioval tak větší množství výzkumných projektů prováděných jak měřením in situ, tak laboratorními studiemi materiálu nasbíraného v přímořské Antarktidě.
