Kafka: the Body, Women and Sex in Correspondence and Diaries

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce reflektuje fenomény těla, ženy a sexuality ve společenském, estetickém a genderovém kontextu, v němž Franz Kafka žil. Využívá Kafkova osobní stanoviska z dopisů a deníků, která interpretuje pomocí sekundární literatury. Díky poznatkům o Kafkovi dojde k odhalení spletitých představ o tělech, ženách a sexualitě v období fin-de-siécle, době vrcholné modernity kolem roku 1900. Práce klade důraz na biografii Franze Kafky a popis společnosti v kontextu hnutí za reformu života (Lebensreform), genderového uspořádání společnosti, představě o ideálním mužství a ženství nebo fungování sexuálních vztahů.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis reflects the phenomena of the body, women and sexuality in the social, aesthetical and gender context, in which Franz Kafka lived. It uses Kafka's personal statements taken from his letters and diaries, which are interpreted by using secondary literature. The complex periodical ideas about bodies, women and sexuality in the fin-de siécle period, time of the peak of the modern era around the year 1900, are being revealed thanks to the knowledge about Kafka. This work emphasizes Franz Kafka's biography and the description of the social arrangement considering the context of the Lebensreform (life reform movement), a gender social hierarchy, an idea about the manhood and the womanhood, or the principles of sexual relationships.
