The Imagery of Rina Lasnier

Abstract:

The main objective of our Ph.D. dissertation was to explore the complex poetic Universe of the French-Canadian poet Rina Lasnier (born 6 August 1910 in St-Grégoire d´Iberville, Québec; died 9 May 1997 in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Québec) and to offer an interpretative code which could help to capture the deep power of Lanier´s poetic imagination. Unquestionably, Rina Lasnier is a significant francophone poet of the twentieth century. Her exploration of the spirit and cultivation of interiority suggest affinities with Quebec´s context: Nelligan, the neo-Thomism (see Jacques Maritain, father Couturier), the group around the magazine Relève and the authors like Alain Grandbois, Gaston Miron, Anne Hébert, as well with the non-Quebec´s universal context (see Virginia Woolf, Paul Claudel, Hölderlin, etc.), which place Rina Lasnier in a period of extraordinary illumination in the writings of the Quebec modernity. This comparison and frequent distinction mark the new tradition, modernity and universality of the analyzed poetry. It is time to review, in this light, the poetic contribution of Rina Lasnier. In fact, Rina Lasnier managed to profile herself outside the official currents directly not depending either on the conservative and nationalist Catholicism, or on the later, liberal, secular, neo-nationalism. Apart from the commitments, her work has become part of the tradition as well as the modernity. By her individualism and her conception of modernity, Rina Lasnier had announced and prepared, since the 1940s, the advent of the feminist movement of the 1960s and 1970s, the universal scope of which would oppose the official discourse of neonationalism. Our task consists on the extraction of the triadic model (see Groupe µ) and of the thematic basis of the creative/created universe of Lasnier´s poetic imagination. This poetic universe (“Logos“) is based on an anthropological model conceived as an opposition between human conscience (“Anthropos-figure of poet”) and the surrounding world (“Cosmos-Nature”). This poetry is nearly connected to the arts, painting, and music (see the pictorial and scriptural equivalents in the prose poems of Images et proses (1941). For that reason, we have analyzed the interconnection of artistic media – "poetry / prose-image / photo" – from a dialogical, musical and immersive point of view. As for the analytical tools, we have adopted the interpretative logic that is based on the "thematic-poetic" criteria (see G. Bachelard), "semantics" (see Group μ, mediations, the opposition "Anthropos x Cosmos"). Thus, we have developed and expanded the analysis by comparison and completion. We have classified the poetic matter into two thematic and semantic groups "Nature-Cosmos" and "Anthropos-Lyric Subject", which are both tonic and subjective. We have analyzed the poems from the collections whose publication covers the period from the 1940s to the 1970s - Images et Proses, published in 1941, Memory without days (Mémoire sans jours) (1950), The Song of the Mount (Le Chant de la Montée) (1950), Escales (1950), The White Tree (1966) (L´Abre blanc) to The Thrown Shadow (1970) (L´Ombre jetée). This extension has helped us to understand the evolution of the poetics and mediations that constitute the universe of the imaginary - the verticality that comes from the creation. The studied Imagination translates the process of birth, affirmation and rebirth of the great voice of Lasnier´s poetry.

Cílem mé disertační práce bylo prozkoumat univers obrazotvornosti v poetickém díle quebecké básnířky Riny Lasnier (* 6. srpna 1910 v St-Grégoire d’Iberville, Québec; † 9. května 1997 v Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Québec), a nabídnout interpretační kód uchopující hlubiny autorčiny obrazotvornosti a osvětlující její kořeny. Rina Lasnier je bezpochyby významná frankofonní autorka dvacátého století, která znatelně poznamenala kulturní dění ve své zemi. Její tvorbu charakterizuje osobitý niterný rozměr korespondující s literárním kontextem tehdejšího Québecu – s dílem Émilla Nelligana, vlnou quebeckého novotomismu (cf. Jacques Maritain, otec Couturier), skupinou kolem časopisu Relève a autory jako Alain Grandbois, Gaston Miron, Anne Hébert. Tvorba Riny Lasnier odráží ovšem také ideje celosvětové literatury (cf. Virginia Woolf, Paul Claudel, Hölderlin, etc.). Autorka tak významně ovlivnila období quebecké moderny. Dílo i renomé Riny Lasnier se totiž vyvíjely svobodně, nezávisle na soudobém národním diskursu – konzervativně-nacionálního katolicismu, tak i pozdějšího liberálního, sekulárního, neo-nacionálního hnutí. Tvorba Riny Lasnier 40. let 20. století, odrážející tradiční i modernistické vlivy, tak předznamenává nástup feministického hnutí 60. a 70. let. 20. století. Nabízí se tedy možnost podívat se na její dílo z jiné perspektivy literární obnovy a inovace. Samotná analýza obrazotvornosti v poetickém díle Riny Lasnier spočívá v extrakci tematické základny (cf. poetiky živlů Gastona Bachelarda) opírající se o triadický organizační model skupiny lutyšských rétoriků, sdružujících se pod názvem Groupe µ, v daném utvářejícím se a zároveň tvořícím poetickém universu. Tento univers autorky je založen na antropologickém střetu básnického subjektu („Anthropos“- figura básnického Já) se světem (“Kosmos-Natura”) skrze jazyk („Logos“). Básnický univers Riny Lasnier je rovněž úzce spojen s uměleckým propojením obrazů a textu v prostoru básně (cf. sbírka Images et proses, 1941). Proto jsem zkoumala vnitřní spojitost „básně/prosy-obrazu-fotografie“ z hlediska intra-poetického – dialogického, harmonického, a extra-poetického – lokálního. Poetický materiál jsem rozdělila do dvou tematických a sémantických skupin – „Kosmos-Natura“ a „Anthropos-Lyrický subjekt“. Zkoumala jsem básně ze sbírek publikovaných mezi léty 1940 až 1970 Images et Proses (1941), Mémoire sans jours (1950), Le Chant de la Montée (1950), Escales (1950), L’Abre blanc (1966), L’Ombre jetée (1970). Na základě srovnání daného tematického a sémantického modelu v jednotlivých sbírkách jsem zjistila, že je poetický univers obrazotvornosti tvořen dvěma konstitučními skupinami – Vertikálností, která vyplývá z instance Stvoření. Poetické dílo Riny Lasnier prochází dvěma fázemi. Lyrický subjekt směřuje k výšinám stvoření božského principu. Zatímco jsou první sbírky, spojené s poetikou snu vzletu, orientovány na jeho zachycení, zdá se, že od 60. let lyrický subjekt už našel zdroj božského principu, čerpá z něj. Tato fáze je charakterizována živelnou poetikou ohně. Vrcholem spojení s božským principem Stvoření představuje sbírka Fils du Feu (1966), kde se poezie mění v poetické, symbolické, archetypální magma. Studie tohoto poetického vývoje odhaluje složitý proces zrodu, afirmace a vzkříšení lyrického subjektu poezie Riny Lasnier, který se stal nedílnou součástí quebecké moderny, a jehož taje jsem se rozhodla rozklíčovat touto tematicko-sémantickou analýzou.
