Time Perspectives and their Relation to Proenvironmental Attitudes and Behavior

Abstract:

Hlavním tématem této diplomové práce je vztah časových perspektiv a proenvironmentálních postojů a chování. Podle Zimbardovy a Boydovy teorie časových perspektiv kategorizují lidé události do různých typů kognitivních časových rámců (tzv. časových perspektiv). Každý člověk přitom upřednostňuje určité časové perspektivy, čímž vytváří svůj jedinečný způsob vnímání času. V teoretické části práce představuji základní pojmy (proenvironmentální postoje, chování a časové perspektivy) a hledám jejich propojení v environmentalistické literatuře i empirických studiích. Vlastní výzkum, zaměřený na vztahy mezi jednotlivými druhy časových perspektiv a proenvironmentálními postoji a chováním, pak vychází z rešerše předchozích studií. Výzkum byl realizován na vzorku (n = 397) české populace ve věku 13–77 let prostřednictvím on-line dotazníku. Všechny použité škály dosáhly dostatečných až vysokých hodnot reliability. Korelace a analýza rozptylu odhalily mezi proměnnými dva silnější a statisticky signifikantní vztahy, které jsou však v rozporu s aplikací teorie časových perspektiv. Z výzkumu vyplývá, že teoreticky očekávané vztahy mezi proměnnými v daném vzorku neexistují. V diskuzní části práce rozebírám možné důvody tohoto závěru a nastiňuji cesty, kudy by se mohly ubírat další výzkumy.

Abstract:

The main topic of this thesis is the relation between time perspectives and proenvironmental attitudes and behavior. According to the Time Perspective Theory, people categorize events into different cognitive time frameworks (so called time perspectives). Each person tends to emphasize some of these time perspectives over others and thus create his or her unique approach to time perception. In the theoretical part of the thesis, I present the basic concepts (proenvironmental attitudes, behavior and time perspectives). I also examine the possible interconnections among these concepts in both theoretical and empirical sources. In my primary research, I focus on the relations between different types of time perspectives, proenvironmental attitudes and behavior. The research is based on previous studies and reflects their findings. The research was conducted on a sample (n = 397) of the Czech population between 13–77 years of age, and it was carried out through an on-line survey. All of the scales that were used reached satisfactory or high reliability values. Correlation and analysis of variance revealed two significant relations, but these relations were in contradiction with application of the Time Perspective Theory. The research shows that the expected relations between the variables do not exist in this sample. In the discussion part of the thesis, I deal with the possible reasons for this result. I also offer recommendations for future research.
