The theory of Clash of Civilizations and the Reality of Today. Case study: The War in Afghanistan

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se věnuje problematice teorie střetu civilizací, kterou definoval Samuel P. Huntington. Cílem práce je posoudit, zda lze teorii aplikovat na válku v Afghánistánu a potvrdit tak její platnost a použitelnost v mezinárodních konfliktech současného světa. Teoretická část práce popisuje mezinárodní konflikty a teorii střetu civilizací s důrazem na charakteristiku civilizační střetů. Detailně jsou také rozebrány rozdílné znaky islámské a západní kultury, které mohou být zdrojem vzniku konfliktů. Pro praktickou část byla využita metoda případové studie, která detailně analyzuje válku v Afghánistánu i události, které jí předcházely. Pro analýzu jsou využita kritéria civilizačních střetů odvozená z Huntingtonovy teorie. Výsledek této analýzy je nejednoznačný. Některé znaky zlomové války konflikt naplňuje, ale některé, i ty zásadní, nikoli. Lze tedy konstatovat, že nelze válku v Afghánistánu chápat a nakládat s ní jako s klasickým civilizačním střetem

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the issue of the theory of clash of civilizations defined by Samuel P. Huntington. This work aims to assess whether the theory can be applied to the war in Afghanistan and thus confirm the validity and applicability of the theory in international conflicts in today's world. The theoretical part is devoted to international conflicts, the theory of clash of civilizations, emphasizing the characteristics of fault line conflicts. The various features of Islamic and Western culture are also mentioned, especially their differences, which can be the source of conflicts. For the practical part, a case study method was used, which analyses the war in Afghanistan and the events that preceded it. The analysis criteria of civilizational conflicts derived from Huntington's theory are used. The results are ambiguous. The conflict fulfils some features of the fault war, but some, even the fundamental ones, do not. Therefore, the war in Afghanistan cannot be understood and treated as a typical clash of civilizations.
