Toward the Conversationalization of Public Discourse: Showbiz Vlog News

Abstract:

Cílem této magisterské diplomové práce je provést analýzu nově vytvořeného zpravodajského žánru, který označujeme jako showbyznysové vlog zprávy. K showbyznysovým vlog zprávám se řadí pravidelně nahrávaná videa, která se věnují prezentaci zpráv z oblasti showbyznysu. Tato videa je možné najít na různých internetových serverech určených pro sdílení videosouborů, jako například YouTube. Tato diplomová práce se dělí na teoretickou a praktickou část. Teoretická část představuje videobloging a definuje žánr showbyznysových vlog zpráv. Také se zabývá klasifikací vlogů a zkoumá obecné složení jejich diváků. Na začátku praktické části autor obeznamuje čtenáře nejen s konverzační analýzou, která z velké části inspirovala analýzu provedenou v této diplomové práci, ale také s cílem výzkumu. Navíc v této kapitole představujeme materiál vybraný dle analýzy a metodu použitou při transkripci videí. Samotná analýza sestává ze dvou částí. Prví z nich (Kapitola 4) se zabývá diskurzní strukturou showbyznysových vlog zpráv a porovnává ji se strukturou tradičních televizních zpráv. V druhé části (Kapitola 5) je analyzováno pět oblastí konverzačních jevů, které nacházíme v showbyznysových vlog zprávách, a to střídaní replik, fragmentace a opravy, výběr slov, parajazyk a intertextualita. Analýzou bylo dokázáno, že (1) showbyznysové vlog zprávy do velké míry převzaly již existující diskurzní strukturu televizních zpráv a (2) v programech showbyznysových vlog zpráv často nacházíme znaky charakterizující běžnou konverzaci. Přítomnost těchto znaků je považována za důsledek tzv. referee design. Poslední kapitola zkoumá současné směry ve vývoji zpravodajství, které jsou často pokládány za důkazy konverzacionalizace veřejného diskurzu. Pomocí analýzy znaků běžné komunikace, které byly odhaleny v showbyznysových vlog zprávách, jsme prověřili tvrzení, že veřejný diskurz v současnosti nabývá konverzační charakter. Všechny výsledky studie jsou nakonec shrnuty v závěru.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to conduct a thorough analysis of the newly developed genre of news presenting, known under the name showbiz vlog new. The term showbiz vlog news designates regularly uploaded videos, in which showbiz news are presented. These videos can be found on video-sharing platforms, such as YouTube. The thesis is divided into theoretical and practical parts. In the theoretical part, the phenomenon of videoblogging is introduced and the genre of showbiz vlog news is defined. In addition, the attention is paid to the classification of vlogs and the make-up of vlog audience. The analytical part starts with the description of Conversation Analysis, which has largely inspired the present analysis, and the outline of research objectives. Furthermore, the material used in the analysis is presented and the transcribing method is described. The analysis itself consists of two main parts. The first part (Chapter 4) deals with the discursive structure of showbiz vlog news and compares it with the structure of broadcast news bulletin. The second part (Chapter 5) examines five domains of interactional phenomena in showbiz vlog news, namely turn-taking, fragmentations and repairs, lexical choice, paralanguage and inter¬textuality. The analysis has demonstrated that (1) showbiz vlog news has adopted the discourse structure of broadcast news and (2) features characteristic of ordinary conversation are frequently employed in showbiz vlog news. Their presence is understood as the evidence of the referee design. The last chapter deals with current trends in news presenting, which are considered consequences of the process known as the conversationalization of public discourse. By examining the conversational features found in showbiz vlog news, the claim that public discourse is becoming more conversation-like is tested. Lastly, all findings are summarized in the conclusion.
