Macroinvertebrate response to restoration of small streams

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je srovnání revitalizovaných a regulovaných úseků na malých vodních tocích v České republice. Práce se dále zaměřuje na narušení hydromorfologických poměrů, které zvyšují negativní účinky antropogenních stresorů na vodní ekosystémy. Pro hodnocení těchto systémů byl použit jako bioindikátor makrozoobentos, který dobře reaguje na změny v hydromorfologických poměrech. Pomocí analýz v programu ArcGIS byl podrobněji zkoumán říční koridor sledovaných úseků. Teoretická část této práce se zaměřuje na vlivy změn v hydromorfologii vodních toků, na makrozoobentos a výčet základních fyzikálních a chemických vlastností toku. V praktické části byly párově srovnány revitalizované a regulované úseky v rámci biotických a abiotických proměnných. Protože nebyl nalezen významný rozdíl mezi úseky, byly hledány vztahy na úrovni lokalit. Bylo zjištěno, že na více zatížených lokalitách jsou výraznější rozdíly ve výskytu makrozoobentosu díky změně v lokální hydromorfologii. Analýzy říčních koridorů a následná korelace s abiotickými a biotickými proměnnými prokázaly význam využití říční nivy pro revitalizace. Tyto poznatky představují významné informace potřebné pro plánování revitalizací a pro predikci ekologických účinků.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to compare revitalised and regulated sections on small streams in the Czech Republic. The work further aims at disruption of hydromorphological relation which increases the adverse impact of anthropogenic stressors on water ecosystems. To assess these systems, macrozoobenthos was used as a bioindicator which reacts well to changes in hydromorphological relations. The river corridor of studied sections was examined in details by employing analyses in the ArcGIS programme. The theoretical part of the work aims at the impacts of changes in stream hydromorhpology at macroinvertebrate communities and at listing of basic physical and chemical characteristics of a streams. In the practical part, the restored and regulated sections were compared in pairs in the scope of biotic and abiotic variables. Because no significant difference between the sections was found, relationships on the level of localities were being searched for. It was found out that in the localities degraded by human activities, there are more significant differences in the macroinvertebrate characteristics due to changes in local hydro morphology. The analyses of the river corridors and further their correlation with abiotic and biotic variables have showed the importance to consider the alluvial plain in restoration strategies. These results represent important information needed for planning of stream restorations and for prediction of thein ecological effects.
