The Songs about Death in Czech Hymn Books of Early Modern Age

Abstract:

Tato práce zpracovává motiviku písní o smrti a posledních věcech člověka v českých raně novověkých kancionálech. Úvodní kapitoly se zabývají problematikou zbožnosti, smrti, konfesijními rozdíly a další literaturou o smrti. Dále jsou definovány poslední věci člověka, a to iv historickém kontextu. Nedílnou součástí textu jsou kapitoly uvažující nad funkcí a cíli.kancionálové písně. Ve statistické části je předložena metoda zpracování dat a její užitečnost při literárněvědném bádání. Následuje druhý celek práce ? definice motivu a analýza hlavních motivických celků. Zpracovány jsou motivy čas, věčnost, hřích, dobro(tivost), nebe (království), smrt, tělo, a to nejen v jejich základních významových rovinách, ale i ve vztahu k dobové teologii, literatuře a jejich funkčnímu užití. Nedílnou součástí této práce je přílohová část. Je v ní zpřístupněn jak rozsáhlý katalog písňový, tak podrobný katalog motivů vyskytujících se v písních o smrti a posledních věcech člověka raného novověku. Podrobné grafy umožňují hlubší studium jednotlivých částí této problematiky, stejně tak jako tabulky zobrazující výsledky práce procentuálně.

Abstract:

This dissertation deals with the motif of songs about death and the last things of man in Czech early modern-age hymnbooks. The opening chapters examine the issue of piety, death, confessional distinctions and other literature concerning death. Furthermore, the last things of man are defined in a historical context. Chapters investigating the functions and aims of hymn songs form an integral part of this thesis. The statistical section presents the method of data-processing and its usefulness in literary studies. The second part of the thesis defines the motif and analyzes the main motivic units. The following motifs are explored: time, eternity, sin, good, heaven (kingdom), death and body. These are dealt with not only in terms of their meaning but also with regard to contemporary theology, literature and their functional use. The appendix is an integral part of the thesis. Not only does it include the extensive catalog of songs but also a detailed catalog of motifs which occur in songs about death and the last things of man in early modern age. The detailed graphs enable an in-depth study of the individual aspects of this issue. The same applies to the charts illustrating the results of this thesis in percentage.
