Attributing agency to inanimate objects

Abstract:

Díky výzkumům v oblasti mozku víme, že jsme schopni přisuzovat aktérství (anglicky agency) i neživým objektům, jako jsou pohybující se čtverce či kruhy. Víme, že i jednoduchý obrazec, jako kruh, může vykazovat znaky lidského chování. V našem experimentu jsme chtěli prozkoumat, zda aktérství přisuzujeme geometrickým objektům, jež disponují odlišností pohybu oproti ostatním promítaným objektům. Tato odlišnost se vyznačuje směrem pohybu, který je o 180 stupňů otočený ku směru pohybu ostatních promítaných objektů. Ke zjištění, zda respondenti přisuzují aktérství promítaným geometrickým útvarům, jsme použili efektu intencionálního bindingu (dále je IB), který byl ověřen velkým počtem studií a jenž říká, že pokud určitou činnost či pohyb vykonáváme vědomě, tak prodleva mezi tímto činem a jeho efektem se nám zdá kratší, než pokud by tato činnost nebyla vykonána vědomě. K tomuto účelu jsme vytvořili dvě studie, kdy první se zabývala explicitním hodnocením účastníky experimentu a jejím úkolem bylo ověřit, zda respondenti budou vnímat v opačném směru se pohybující objekt jako více disponující aktérstvím. Tato hypotéza se potvrdila a respondenti přisuzovali iregulérnímu objektu vlastnosti asociované s aktérstvím. Po tomto ověření následovala druhá studie, jenž měla aktérství ověřit pomocí implicitních metod – stisknutí tlačítka. Ve druhé studii se ale nepodařilo u respondentů vyvolat efekt IB a nebylo tedy prokázáno přisuzování aktérství na základě odlišnosti pohybu v opačném směru.

Abstract:

As per other studies of the brain, we know, that we can associate agency with inanimate objects, such as moving circles or squares. We know that even a simple pattern, like circle, can exhibit signs of human behaviour. In our experiment we set a goal to examine if we attribute agency to geometric objects that moves in a different way compared to other objects. This difference is characterized by the direction of motion that is turned 180 degrees compared to movement of other objects. To determine whether the respondents attribute agency to the geometrical shapes we used effect of intentional binding, which has been studied and confirmed by numerous studies. IB tells us, that if we do a certain activity or movement intentionally then the perceived time delay between the start and end of such activity is as shorter than it in reality is. For this purpose, we have created two experiments. The first studied if respondents perceived object moving in an opposite direction as having more attributes associated with object with agency. This hypothesis was confirmed. After that we conducted second experiment, which aim was to confirm that we associate the agency with implicit measures – by pressing button. In our second experiment we were unable to evoke IB effect in our respondents and the hypothesis of attributing agency to object moving in different direction was not confirmed.
