Teaching Methods and Approaches Used by Czech English Teachers in Lower Secondary Education

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá výukovými metodami a přístupy českých učitelů angličtiny na druhém stupni základní školy. Teoretická část vysvětluje klíčové rysy jednotlivých metod a přístupů zkoumaných v rámci výzkumu. Dále také nabízí pohled na preferované výukové metody a přístupy z pohledu učitelů i studentů. Kromě toho, se také věnuje roli mateřského jazyka a chybám ve výuce. Praktická část této práce je založena na kvalitativním výzkumu, kterého se účastnili tři čeští učitelé angličtiny. Pro zjištění co nepřesnějších dat byla použita metoda triangulace, zahrnující přímé pozorování, polostrukturovaný rozhovor a analýzu učebních materiálů, použitých při výuce. Během výzkumu byla věnována pozornost stylům výuky učitelů, jazyku, který používají, a způsobu, jakým se pedagogové vyrovnávají s chybou. V závěrečné části jsou diskutována zjištění a zodpovězeny všechny výzkumné otázky.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis examines the teaching methods and approaches employed by Czech English teachers in lower secondary education. The theoretical part explains the key features of each method investigated in the research and offers insights into the favoured teaching methods and approaches from the perspective of both teachers and students. Additionally, the role of the mother tongue and errors in learning are also addressed. The empirical part is based on qualitative research conducted with three Czech English teachers. In order to find the most relevant data, the triangulation method involving direct observations, semi-structured interviews, and materials analysis was employed. During the research, attention was paid to the teachers’ teaching styles, the language they use, and how educators deal with errors. In the final part, the findings are discussed, and all research questions are answered.
