The Policy of Appeasement in the 1930s

Abstract:

Tématem mé bakalářské práce je Britská politika appeasementu ve 30. letech 20. století. Hlavním cílem práce je vysvětlit roli appeasementu na pozadí důležitých mezinárodních událostí tohoto období s ohledem na britskou zahraniční politiku. Dalším souvisejícím tématem je formování kolektivní bezpečnosti v Evropě, kterou zastřešovala Společnost národů, jejímž hlavním posláním bylo řešit případné konflikty mírovou cestou. Téma bakalářské práce je rozděleno do šesti chronologicky řazených částí. První kapitola se věnuje mírové konferenci v Paříži a podpisu Versailleské smlouvy s Německem. Následující část práce se zabývá otázkou formování kolektivní bezpečnosti, která se stala základním předpokladem pro zachování míru také po druhé světové válce. Tato část se věnuje vzniku Společnosti národů, návrhu Ženevského protokolu a Locarnským smlouvám, které zároveň uzavírají třetí část této práce. Čtvrtá část se snaží charakterizovat politiku appeasementu a její dopady na situaci v Evropě. Pátá část je zaměřena na situaci v Evropě po nástupu Hitlera k moci a politické postoje Francie a Británie. Poslední část mé bakalářské práce je zaměřena na zhroucení versailleského a locarnského systému, uzavření Mnichovské dohody a samotné zahájení expanze nacistického Německa.

Abstract:

The topic of my thesis is The Policy of Appeasement in the 1930s. The main aim of my work is to explain the role of the appeasement in important international affairs of the British foreign policy. Another interrelated topic is the history and conception of collective security under the League of Nations in Europe. The role of the League was supposed to be strengthened by the Geneva Protocol establishing the rule based on peaceful settlement of any conflict between the member states. The topic of the thesis is splitted into six parts. The first chapter is about the Paris Peace Conference and Treaty of Versailles. Following part of the thesis point at the conception of the collective security, which became a foundations of the peace after the World War II. This part also includes the League of Nations, Geneva protocol and Locarno Treaties. Fourth part is focused on the policy of appeasement and its impact on the situation in Europe. Fifth part describes the situation in Europe when Hitler was named Chancellor of Germany in the year 1933. The very last part of my bachelor work is focused on failing the Treaties of Versailles and Locarno, signing of Munich Agreement and the beginning of the Nazi Germany territorial expansion.
