Biology and systematics of shrimps of the genus Cuapetes (Crustacea, Decapoda, Pontoniinae)

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo shrnout dosavadní znalosti a poznatky z dostupné odborné literatury, o systematické pozici, biologi a rozšíření krevet rodu Cuapetes (Crustacea: Decapoda: Palaemonidae) a získat o nich ucelený přehled. Cuapetes je dodnes málo prozkoumanou skupinou krevet, které není věnována podstatná pozornost. Důvodem může být drobný vzrůst zástupců, stenozonní areál rozšíření, nesnadná dosažitelnost, či nevýraznost vzhledu. Jedna šedá zóna problematiky pramení ze synonymie. Různí autoři nevědomě popsali stejné druhy pod jinými názvy v různých částech světa, či popsali nové druhy na základě chybného odlišení pouhých ekologických a fenotypových variant, samců od samic, juvenilních jedinců od dospělců, či různých fází vývojového cyklu jediného druhu (Bouchet, 2006). Dalším aspektem jsou neustálé změny v biologické klasifikaci, jak s příchodem nových technologií a postupů na konci minulého tisíciletí (molekulární genetika a fylogeneze) a nálezů (nových druhů, doplňujících znalosti o systematice, atd.), tak rozdílných názorů vědců. To se týká i jednotky Pontoniinae, která byla společně s Palaemoninae De Gravem et al. (2015) synonymizována s nadřazenou čeledí Palaemonidae. Touto problematikou jsem se zabývala v přehledové části s rozborem literatury, zahrnujíc seznam synonymie Cuapetes a velké části významných vědeckých prací, které synonymní názvy zmiňují.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis was to summarize the existing knowledge and findings from the available scientific literature, dealing with systematic position, biology and distribution of shrimps of the genus Cuapetes (Crustacea: Decapoda: Palaemonidae), and to get a comprehensive overview about them. The Cuapetes is very little explored genus of shrimps to this day, with only little attention given to them. The reasons could be found in their small size, specific area of distribution, difficult access or their inconspicuous look. One grey zone of problematics stems from the synonymy. Different authors could describe the same species under different names in various places of the world, without knowing. Or they described them as new species by wrong distiguishing of the ecological or fenotypy variants, of males from females, juveniles from adults, or different phases of the life cycle (Bouchet, 2006). Another aspect is the continuous changes in biological classification, with the approach of new technologies and methods on the end of the last millenium (molecular genetics and phylogeny) and findings (of new species, that add to the knowledge about systematics, etc.), also new approaches of scientists. That involves the matter of systematics of Cuapetes, on higher level. The taxon Pontoniinae was together with Palaemoninae recently synonymized with the superior unit Palaemonidae by De Grave et al. (2015). I looked into these problematics in the review part, including a list of synonymy of Cuapetes species and several relevant scientific publications that mention any of them.
