Health, hygiene and dietetic questions as the topic of the travel-books of the Pre-White Mountain Period

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá zkušenostmi českých raně novověkých cestovatelů s hygienou a dietetikou během jejich cesty. Cílem je odhalit, jak se cestovatelé vyrovnávali s novými podmínkami, jaký vliv měly na jejich hygienické návyky a jak hodnotili životní návyky u obyvatel navštívených zemí. Autorka podrobila analýze česky psané předbělohorské cestopisy se zřetelem na odkazy směřující ke zdravovědě a hygieně, tak jak byly koncipovány v regiminech sanitatis. Dietetické zásady byly vnímány jako klíč k udržení dobrého zdraví a jedinec měl podle konceptu sex res non naturales sledovat své návyky v oblasti jídla a pití, tělesného pohybu, spánku, látkové výměny, emocí a také prostředí. Na základě zjištěných informací je patrné, že úroveň cestování a hygieny v raném novověku byla poměrně vysoká, i když se cestovatelé museli vyrovnávat s novými podmínkami a změnou životosprávy. Přínosem práce je jiný pohled na českou předbělohorskou cestopisnou literaturu.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with experience of czech early modern age travelers with hygiene and dietetik along their journeys. Goal is to uncover how travelers dealt with new conditions, what influence it had on their hygiene habits and how they rated life habits of people living in visited coutries. Author put trough analysis Pre-White Mountain Period travel-books written in czech and focused on references pointing to hygienics, as they were conceived in regiminech sanitatis. Dietetic habits were seen as the key to preserve good health and a man should, according to concept of sex res non naturales, observe his habits in the area of food and drink, body movement, sleep, metabolism and emotions. Bases on achieved information it is clear, that level of traveling and hygiene in early modern age was quite high, though the travelers must have dealt with new conditions and also change of their personal regime. Benefit of the thesis is a different way of looking on Pre-White Mountain Period czech written literature.
