The Independent Scene of Computer Games Industry

Abstract:

Tato práce rozebírá problematiku průmyslu počítačových her optikou drobného, nezávislého vývojáře a seznamuje čtenáře s jeho nejtypičtějšími rysy v posledních letech. Počítačové hry jsou sice mladým médiem, mají však za sebou dynamický rozvoj. Koncem devadesátých let se ustanovila relativně stálá podoba herního průmyslu, jíž dominují velké producentské korporace a specifický způsob vývoje her. Práce popisuje tento takzvaný „producentský vývojový model“, pokračuje popisem jeho úskalí a překážek pro začínající vývojáře a končí představením nezávislé scény – a to jak jejích ideologické stránky, tak konkrétních vývojových metod. Cílem práce je představit koncept nezávislých her coby alternativní metody k producentskému modelu.

Abstract:

The thesis discusses the computer games industry from the viewpoint of a small, independent game developer, and introduces its main features to the reader. Although computer games are still a young medium, they have already experienced a dynamical development. This concluded in the end of the 1990's, when the game industry as we know it today was established – industry dominated by producer corporations. The thesis describes the so-called “producer development model”, continues with its problems and obstacles it presents for beginning developers, and ends by introducing the independent scene – both its ideological features and related development methods. The goal of this thesis is to introduce the concept of independent games as an alternative approach to game creation.
