China and Soviet Goals and Influences in North Vietnam During the Second Indochina War

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce zkoumá vliv a cíle Čínské lidové republiky a Sovětského svazu při podpoře Vietnamské demokratické republiky během druhé indočínské války v období od roku 1964 do roku 1969. Práce je zaměřena na identifikaci politických důvodů ČLR a SSSR, jež vedly tyto země k angažování se při podpoře VDR, dále pak na analýzu politické reakce ČLR a SSSR na Tonkinský incident a na analýzu vlivu sino-sovětské roztržky na válku ve Vietnamu. Práce je postavena na kritické analýze dokumentů CIA a doplňkové sekundární literatury. Výsledkem práce je zjištění, že hlavním důvodem ČLR pro podporu VDR byla obava z americké intervence v ČLR. U SSSR to pak byla změna zahraniční politiky v důsledku nástupu Leonida Brežněva k moci. Analýzou politických reakcí ČLR a SSSR na Tonkinský incident došla tato studie k závěru, že reakce ČLR i SSSR byla v souladu s jejich tehdejší zahraniční politikou. Vliv sino-sovětské roztržky se projevil zejména neshodami mezi ČLR a SSSR při přepravě materiálu do VDR a snahou obou zemí získat v Indočíně dominantní postavení, což vedlo k vytváření politického tlaku na VDR.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis examines the influence and the objectives of the People’s Republic of China and the Soviet Union in supporting the Democratic Republic of Vietnam during the 1964-1969 period of the Second Indochina War. The paper has three main objectives. To identify the political reasons which led PRC and USSR to engage in supporting VDR, to analyze PRC’s and USSR’s political reaction on Tonkin Incident, and to analyze the impact of the Sino-Soviet split on the Vietnam War. The method of this thesis is based on critical analysis of CIA documents and supplementary secondary literature. The paper finds that main political reason for PRC to engage in Vietnam War on DRV’s side was a threat of extending American intervention into PRC. In USSR, the reason for engaging in the Vietnam War was a change of the course in foreign policy after appointing Leonid Brezhnev as a new General Secretary of the CPSU. By analyzing the political reactions of PRC and USSR on Tonkin Incident it was found out that both reactions were in line with foreign policy of both countries. The impact of Sino-Soviet split on Vietnam War is, above all, manifested itself by the Sino-soviet disputes over the weapons transport to the DRV and by effort of both countries to gain dominant position in Indochina which led to creation of the political pressure on DRV.
