''Searching for the possibility of the impossible'' - a study of cross-border elements in the works of Marionetteatern under Michael Meschke's direction

Abstract:

This thesis is a study of cross-border elements in the works of Marionetteatern, the first permanent puppet theatre in Sweden. The thesis will focus on three selected performances that were in the theatre's repertoire under the time of Michael Meschke's direction: Kung Ubu (1964), Antigone (1977) and Apokalypsen (1998). The aim of this thesis is to analyze experimental and cross-border elements in these performances, in relation to traditional puppetry techniques and their staging. Experimental blending with other types of performing arts is something characteristic for Marionetteatern, as well as their strong believe in collaboration with other cultures and the mutual inspiration that comes with it. The thesis studies how these concepts are demonstrated on Marionetteatern's stage.

Abstract:

Táto magisterská diplomová práca sa zaoberá experimentálnymi prvkami v tvorbe Marionetteatern, prvého stáleho švédskeho bábkového divadla. Práca je štúdiou troch vybraných predstavení: Kung Ubu (1964), Antigone (1977) a Apokalypsen (1998). Cieľom práce je zanalyzovať a popísať prvky, ktorými Marionetteatern posúva alebo búra zaužívané hranice bábkového divadla, a to z hľadiska použitých techník, bábok, typov scény, ako aj z hľadiska kombinácie bábkarstva s inými druhmi scénického umenia. Práca sa tiež sústreďuje na spôsob, akým Marionetteatern pod vedením Michaela Meschkeho prekračovalo kultúrne hranice, a ako sa inšpirácia prvkami iných bábkarskych tradícií odrazila na tvorbe divadla. Praktická časť je vypracovaná formou analýzy filmových nahrávok spomenutých troch predstavení.
