What should be the new Czech president like?

Abstract:

Předložená magisterská práce se zabývá otázkou: Jaký by měl být nový český prezident? Zajímáme se především o dílčí vlastnosti důležité pro české voliče ve vztahu k hodnocení ideálního prezidenta. V teoretické části práce popisujeme oblast politické psychologie a teorii mentálních reprezentací, které jsou nápomocné pro orientováníse v politickém prostoru. Na procesu volebního rozhodování se podílí několik faktorů náležících především do oblastí sociální struktury a vazeb, politických predispozic a politické komunikace. Poslední zmiňované téma je podrobněji diskutováno s přihlédnutím k volebním kampaním a procesu prezentace kandidátů na prezidentský úřad. V empirické části replikujeme modifikovanou podobu studie „Prezidentské prototypy“ (Kinder et al. 1980). Jednotlivé kategorie obsahující dvě polarity (pozitivní a negativní) dílčích vlastností (osobnostních charakteristik a jednání v prezidentském úřadu), které užíváme v online dotazníku a aplikujeme na šest reálných kandidátů ucházejících se o post hlavy státu. Dle výsledků datové analýzy respondenti za nejdůležitější vlastnosti prezidenta považují „čestnost“ a „jednání jako příkladný představitel státu“. Nejvíce pozitivní obraz má dle dotazovaných Karel Schwarzenberg a Vladimír Franz. Naopak Přemysl Sobotka je vnímám nejvíce negativně. Závěry studie lze chápat jako podpůrné informace pro podobnou oblast zkoumání. Ambicí autorky je podat přehled o tomto tématu v českém prostředí, a tak nastolit novou diskusi vztahující se k této problematice pro následné spřízněné studie.

Abstract:

The submitted work deals with the question: What should be the new Czech president like? We are interested especially in the characteristics important for the Czech voters in relation to evaluation of the ideal president. The theoretical part of the work describes the area of politic psychology and the theory of mental representation that are useful for orientation in the are of politics. The process of voters´ decision is affected by several factors mainly in the area of social structure and relations, political predispositions and political communication. The latter issue is discussed in detail with focus on election campaigns and the presentations of the candidates for the president office. In the empirical part we include modified version of study “President prototypes” (Kinder et al. 1980). The individual categories contain two polarities (positive and negative) of characteristics (personal characteristics and acting in the president office) that we use in an online questionnaire and apply them to six real candidates which run for the office of the head of state. According to the data analysis the respondents consider the most important characteristic of a president to be honesty and acting like a model representative of the state. The respondents perceive most positively Karel Schwarzenberg and Vladimír Franz. On the other hand Přemysl Sobotka is perceived most negatively. The conclusions of the study may be understood as supporting information for similar area of research. The aim of the author is to provide overview of this topic in the Czech environment and by doing this to establish new discussion relating to this problematic for similar studies that may follow.
